Cindy,

Be careful when sending UPS, my husband was a UPS manager and sometimes, not always, a base is difficult to deliver to. The UPS driver is cleared to go on base, but addresses can be a problem, UPS doesn't like APO and FPO, PO box addresses, they like street addresses only and sometimes back charge a package with a PO box address for the correction to a street. USPS doesn't have that problem, but many other (slow) problems. We sent my son 2 boxes USPS and though it took a bit longer than UPS - he still got them OK. Mostly his civilian clothes and books.

Hi Marty! You're right, I need to check into the flat-rate boxes. I'll probably use UPS to get him his phone (and IPOD) and then look for something much cheaper for everything else.

Hi ALL,
I haven't been on in awhile. I am a teacher and this school year has been really crazy. My son is SEFC for sonar. He has been in Groton since last February. Presently he is in A school and should graduate in Jan. He would have graduated Dec.10, but broke his hand and had to have surgery. Anyway we visited the base this summer and brought my son his car. It is a small town and I can understand why my son was so excited to have his car. The cabs charge a lot so unless they have a friend who has a car they are some what limited to what they can do off base. It also gets pretty cold there. If any of you have a question I will try to answer it.

Cindy - don't forget those flat-rate boxes you can get from the post office. Pay for the box, then no extra cost no matter what it weighs

After three longs weeks since PIR I finally talked to my son today. He arrived in Groton on Friday and is finding his way around. He'll start INDOC on Monday, and is bummed that he'll be behind everyone he was with at boot camp. He traveled with another guy who had a similar situation with a hold, and they're actually roommates now. He's very happy to be in Groton and can't wait to get his cell phone and laptop (I knew he'd call for them!). It's good to know he's finally arrived and I found it funny when he talked about it being such a small town and so quiet with nothing to do -- my thought as a mom is GOOD! He did say one thing that I thought was funny. Being from California he said he's talked with a few others also from CA and the food they miss most is In-n-Out burgers- a CA landmark! I'm thinking I'm going to get him a t-shirt to include in his box of stuff that I'll be shipping. Can't wait for the regular communication to get underway -- once I get past the shock of the cost of sending his stuff to him. I took a quick look at prices for fed ex and UPS and all I can say is OUCH! Oh well, the phone calls will be well worth it.

Grace - ask away. My son just started BESS on Monday, so I don't have lots of answers, but others on here will definitely help you. Great group! Welcome!

My son PIR on 8/7/09. He is in Groton for SECF. All of his training is in CT. He also stated that most that come from BC come in on Tuesdays. Just thought you would like to know what I have been told by my sailor.

Oh, i see i think. LOL I think my son did say something about being somewhere for 4 weeks and then going to Groton. I need to start recording our phone conversations, cause when he calls I forget everything. I ask him questions in letters, which I write almost everyday, but I don't get a lot of answers back.
