My son is coming home from GTMO in approx. 3 weeks. He said he is going to be shipping some of his things home, so I told him to start now, as it will take 2-3 weeks for his things to arrive here. He really surprised me when he told me how much money he had saved while in Cuba. It turned out to be a good thing after all! I will be so glad when he is back in the states - even tho Florida is far from Illinois - he will be able to use his cell phone again.

Gals, try to get them to send/take their stuff with them . . . I shipped Cody's "new" PS3 gaming system at a cost of $60!!! I think the Navy offers a "pack out" or "ship out" thing where the sailor can ship their things ahead of time to avoid their Mom's having to ship later.

Rana,
glad to hear its not just me. maybe someday they will listen.

I remember one broke moment of clarity when I looked at our video collection and said # x $20 = WHAT!!!! How did I spend that much money on DVDs!!!

Hopefully one day soon my kid will do the math and stop spending.

When we had the fund for your future talk John said he is putting some away. Ok, what can we do? Just be there to say "I told you so" like my parents did - lol

hmmm, I dont know about the tv as we are not tv watchers. My son games on his laptop.

John sent home 3 boxes of DVD cases. I know he left a lot of stuff in storage. Maybe Eric can just store his stuff instead of selling it (if its good stuff).

I am glad you will get to see him for Xmas, I am having a hard time with this holiday season but we will all get through it.

What is Eric's job? My son is a corpsman.

Agreed, my son spends it all, much to my frustration! We finally talked him into funding his Roth IRA so he has something to show when he's done! Sorry I can't offer more encouragement, but he spends like there is no tomorrow!

Jody,

John has a hole in his pocket, that boy has to spend every dime he gets.

My son took his guitar (not sure if he took his amp) and laptop and all of his dvds in one of those traveling binders. So I assume a gaming system is fine. I will ask him when we next im.

John spent a few weeks in the open barracks before getting his room that he shares with 3 other guys. So I am not sure what storage room he has but he has not mentioned any problems.

When is your son going?

Oh no, that is not very encouraging Kimme HA-right now mine pretty much blows it all on his truck, but since that won't be there, maybe there is hope.
When they first go over, is there room to take gaming systems and things like that, or are they confined to the duffle bags. As of now, we know nothing.

HA! I was just (literally just hung up the phone with my dad who is retired navy) complaining about my son blowing his paychecks.

That kid has an amazing collection of DVD's and is buying his 2nd expensive gaming computer this year. He has ordered a camera and the computer since he got to gitmo in October.

But that may only be my kid. I hope others are financially smarter or listen to their mommys : )

This is probably going to sound like an odd question, but do your son/daughters tend to save more being that there is no where to go, or is there enough to do and buy that the paycheck still seems to disappear.

Jody,
Skype has not worked for John at all. He has bought internet for his room (shares with roomies) and also they have a phone in the room. John called once and said they can make one call a day.
He has messenger or AIM and we "talk" though that most often
