My son is at Camp Phoenix if he ever gets there, Larry. I know someone else at Camp Blackhorse. They've been there since February.

My son volunteered for an ia. Before he volunteerd he had spent 2 years in Sicily and 3 in Washington DC. He has been in Afghanistan for 2 months on a 6 month ia deployment. To the best I can figure he is with an Army unit assigned to ISAF (NATO?). He trained for 3 weeks at Ft Leanord Wood and 3 weeks at Ft Jackson before deploying. I worry about him every day but I have to remind my self that he is a men now and not the boy we sent to GL I'm counting the days intill he gets leave and he and I can take a trip to Grand Cayman to scuba together

Thanks Ruth. I appreciate all the time you've given me over the last two days. I'm actually starting to feel better about the whole thing. Not completely but I'm definitely getting there.

Eric's in school to be a GSM (Gas Systems Turbine Technician) but he's talking about leaving school to volunteer in whatever capacity he's needed. Did your son get to go home before he left for Iraq?

I told Eric that I'd get whatever information I could for him and email it to him because he wouldn't get a chance to talk to anyone until probably tomorrow because of the holiday. So, I sent him a bunch of information from this site plus input from my brother in law (a retired Marine Major) and told him that I knew he'd do whatever it was he needed to do.

What's his job going to be? My son is a gunner's mate. He was in charge of an armory at one camp, then got transferred. Another sailor that went over with him is a mechanic, several others are intelligence specialists. All of them are in or around "the big camp." Honestly, I worried more when my son was on the aircraft carrier--that he'd fall off the ship! You just have to tell your son how proud you are of him and keep supporting him. When my son went to Ft. Riley for combat training before he left, I just kept telling him to be the best student he's ever been and learn everything he could to stay safe.

Eric's still in A school and apparently he and one of his buddies have decided to do this. I'm just a mess right now. I thought boot camp was tough but this is just not what I was expecting to hear from him. I know it's supposed to be safe but I'm just scared to death.

Hopefully Navy Recruiter Air that is a member of this group will help answer your questions. I just know that my son got what he wanted, but he's been in almost five years and is close to taking his test for PO1. He was deployed on ship before this assignment.

Really Ruth? What's the deal with it? Do they always get their pick of home port and job when they're finished with their tour? Do they go back to A school or right to the fleet?

Kimberly, I'm glad you found us! I saw you started a group with A school moms, so send anyone this way who responds! My son was going to be a riverene which sacred me more than being an IA! He's been home on leave--just tell your son not to volunteer for convoys! Being an IA has been a good career move for him.

My son just called to tell me he's considering IA. All I heard was "Iraq for a year" which scares me silly.
