Hi Ruth,
You know when Brian went IAGSA, I felt like he was being treated as "leftovers". I mean here the Navy had spent all this time and money training him to be a sub driver and he is very good at it. Then they decommissioned his sub, threw him in the general labor pool(or whatever it's called that un-boated sailors get stuck in) then ship him off to the sand hills of Poppyland. Frankly, I didn't see the sense in that, wasting the talents of a good sailor like that. Now, finally, i have "finally" found a name for the job he is doing in this group i feel like I'm a bit more in the loop now. It's hard to find information on our kids jobs because as we all know the Sub service is "silent" and everything's classified, sigh. What frustration! Well now that i have a name for his job I went digging around on the net and came up with some interesting articles and sites. Seems the Navy actually has a plan for these "sand sailors". That's nice to know because without further info on the rationality for his job, I was getting a bit frustrated that my son was being wasted over there. Well, So now, we need some t-shirts and stickers. for our "Sand Sailors".

The shield is actually the back of a t-shirt of mine that I took a picture of! I got that shirt at a NEX, but I can't remember which one. I got a couple others from the San Diego NEX. I'll ask my son, now at GL, if he'll check at the NEX there. You might be able to find something on the internet. Seems like I've seen them. I think you can find something with "boots on the ground."

Ok, This is a lovely shield our sailors are working under. Anyone know where I can get and iron-on transfer for a T-Shirt or printed T-Shirts? I want to go "Proud Mom" IAGSA ! Is there an online store for IAGSA ?
Thanks so much,
Karen in Ligonier

Hubby Bob is talking with brian right now. He did his job today, then they had a BBQ and played cards. A quiet happy 4th of July in Poppyland. Then he called us. great long call, i talked to him for 20 minutes. he and his Dad love to discuss current events in the US. It's their hobby, smile.
Happy 4th everyone!
Best Regards,
Karen in Ligonier.

There is another group that you might like. "Anyone with Sailors/Soldiers in Iraq & Afghanistan." There are currently 149 members. That group has a bit more comments than this one. Most people don't know what and "IA" is, so I guess that is why there are so few member in this group. I check both every day that I can.

Helmand Province, where my daughter is, is supposed to be the biggest Poppyland in Poppyland. She is inside the base and has to stay CLOSE to the hospital, so she hasn't gotten to spend any time with the locals. Those older guys are lucky to have lived through it all and be able to talk about what they have been through. History, any history, but expecially their's, is fascinating.

Hi Haley's Mom.
He is with a bunch of other loaned out sailors supporting the Army's work in northern Poppyland. He tells us cultural stories. The most fascinating tho, are the conversations with the older Poppyland soldiers. the ones fighting since the 1980's. Their historic view on pre-Soviet, the war with the Soviets, post Soviet and now the rebuilding of things under the US is just fascinating to hear them tell it. He says it gives him a whole new insight on how positively they view this current episode in their history.
Best Regards,
Karen in Ligonier.
