Navy For Moms

My son has been in Japan for a month now. We talked last night and he seemed so negative. I'm hoping he's just going through an adjustment period. He's stationed on the USS Geo. Washington. Can anyone tell me if and how we can send him anything?

Hey JB - my son has been in Japan since Octonber '09 and has really blossomed and loves it.  Your son could be really tired - those first few weeks are very very busy.  As for sending things - is he actually on-board the ship yet or going through indoc?  If he is not yet on board, you'll have to wait just a little longer.  If he's completed indoc and made it aboard ship, he can then provide you with his address and you can start sending things at that point.  don't worry about the occasional negative feedback.  Japan appears to be a much loved duty station and if he doesn't like it now - he will. ;-)

thanks so much....this is so reassuring!

I am seding a friend request.

...hi katlanta, antiM, badma ya'll are so resourceful.  thanks for sharing with us "newbies" its helps and has help a lot!  This is my first support group, lol, who would have thought it would happen because i am a sailor mom -_- i love it and the site : )

Hi jb,

mine has been on the G-Dub for about 4 months (well, the first month was indoc son onboard for 3) Once he got on board and was in a routine he liked it better and batter. He has sent some great pics from site seeing and has made friends to work out with and run with. There is a lot available for them to do and get involved with so the more he gets out there the better it will be.

here's a link in case you haven't joined the George Washington page yet....

My daughter is also in Yokosuka on the Fitz and she hates it. She said there is so much prejudice it is sickening. I just want to scream everytime we talk because she is so frustrated. You can send him packages. The post office has boxes for military and the cost is about $13.  You will also need to get a custom form from the post office. It is a simple process.

jbguerrero5..... here is the GW page here iif ya haven't already joined:http://www.navyformoms.com/group/ussgeorgewashingtonsailors

My son has been in Japan since May 2011 and on the GW since June 2011.He loves it. It is a big adjustment. He will not skype with me but is grreat about email. When ,in port, he will post on facebook sometimes, too. I've sent ya a friend request.

I am looking for an address as well. my son is there too!

what is indoc and how long does it take>

eastmom.... indoc is about 3wks (someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

The sailors learn about Japanese cuture, customs, and transportation. My son enjoyed that part. Have ya joined the GW page on here? FB has a GW page also,if ya have a fb account.

Intercultural relations alone is three days (or so if the walking tour is included).   I used to volunteer at the one held at Family Service Center.  However, orientation for a carrier includes ship specific training so they don't get lost on board, liberty policies, safety and much more.   And their department probably has some introductory stuff as well.   It would add up to around three weeks, but the Japanese culture section is the good part.
