Navy For Moms

Ok my son has been in DEP since March, now we are on the final stretch and now this feels so real. I am getting the phone card, stamps, $20, wallet size pictures....so I think we are prepared, but emotionally, I am getting real nervous, anyone else leaving on this date? He goes to MEPS the day before and stays in a hotel, how do I get his "hotel" clothes and toiletries...ugh! All of a sudden I feel lost.

Sailor mom, Make sure you are reading the posts from Jessica on "leavin' for bootcamp in October" discussion. She'll have the answers for you and is most up to date on whats going on. Unless you are too far away you can meet him at the hotel in the morning and collect his items, but I'm not sure he can take anything not on "the list". So check with the recruiter's office. Also, you can go to the swearing in on the next day before he fly's out. Check on that too. And...you can go to the airport with him and even get a pass to wait with him to load the plain. So check on all this with Jessica and with the recruiter. Good Luck...and remember, this too will pass! You'll understand in about a month to nine weeks... LOL

You don't have to get his "hotel clothes"...they will all be sent back to you in the box that gets sent home when he gets there.  Visit the Leavin' for bootcamp in October page.

hi  ,My son leaves on Oct.26th too....i'm in a panic and drive him crazy saying..." ON the Navy Mom's site it says........"
hollyp - I am so glad to find someone else says that too!! My son is a Deper leaving 10/23 and I say that all the time, it does drive him crazy but this is such a great website and support for us!!

Hi everyone my 18 yr old is on a plane now for the GL, so very proud that he wants to serve this great country of ours, but feeling very empty without him, I know we spend these 18 yrs getting them ready for life but never knew it would feel this way for me. This site has been a life saver just sharing with other moms going through the same thing is encouraging fo me.....Thanks Michelle

As I posted earlier my son was scheduled to leave the 11th, I dropped him off at recruiters office, then he went to the hotel to learn they had his ship out date wrong.  Now he is scheduled to leave the 27th.  Maybe the second time around will be better.  I spent the first hour crying off and on then he called and said he was heading back home.  At least now I know someone else leaving around the same time.  Looks like their graduation will he around christmas.

We also made sure our son had his cell phone and charger. He has some money in his wallet but MEPS gave each shipper a check for food when they got to Chicago. I think it was for $23. Our recruiter told us no pics until we get their address and then can send them. Make sure photo id and ss card are also in his wallet. I got a 900 minute phone card at Best Buy.I also found a small address book - one that would fit in his wallet. So many people don't remember phone numbers with cell phones so we loaded the addresses and phone number in the address book.

12 days :'(
He will send home his hotel clothes in "the box" My son went with the clothes on his back but a lot of the guys leaving with my son had backpacks. They will be returned in the box. Don't feel lost. Don't forget a small address book. MEPS will give them a small bible too.

Hi Girls,

My daughter "Sydzilla" leaves for bootcamp on October 26th as well. We are down to the last few days before heading to MEPS in San Diego... yes, I'm freakin out just a bit. I think the hardest part is knowing that I can't run to her if she needs me. I know this is the right path for her. Some how, the Navy and my daughter found each other, who knew. I'm still in shock, but in a good way. I love hearing everyone's stories, and knowing that I am not alone with my thoughts, that I too have a crew. I'll keep you all posted, please keep posting as well!

Rena...  :)

PS. Jessica's information is AWESOME!

I'm glad we have our own crew too :)

My son leaves on the 26th, he has been in the dep program since feb.  He is ready to leave, hopefully the time will go by fast.  I'm wondering when their pir date will be, it looks to be around christmas.  Hope you are doing ok, I know its difficult.  Yesterday I was flying home thru atlanta, and saw a group of navy boys, it made me proud knowing in 8 weeks that will be my son.
