Donna~ It all depends on how quickly his particular area opens up. My son had PIR on Oct 9th and only waited about 3 wks for the start of his schooling. Some wait for a long time I understand. Guess we were lucky.

Donna ~ The answer is yes and then he'll probably be on hold to start MN school in San Diego! Welcome to Navy life!

Is it pretty normal to be on hold for a while at GL waiting on electronics school?

I suggest gift cards for Christmas. I know it's a little impersonal, but at least they can get what they want or need. You can go on-line and get gift cards for the NEX, that way they can use them no matter where they are stationed.

Hello MN families. My son is in SD and loving school but starting to miss family. Put is for leave for Christmas, but we are patiently waiting. Any suggestions as to what to get our Navy Sailor for Christmas? I know it has to be small and compact whatever it is. He says all he wants is to come home and see family. It's great that he has his cell phone there. I text him almost every day.

Thanks for the advice. My son said he was invited to someones house for the Holiday but he doesn't think he is going to go. And yes I do take it one day at a time. I also cry at the drop of a hat. I try to stay upbeat and think happy thoughts but those nagging Mom thoughts barge in a hit me like a ton of bricks. But as the saying goes. That which does not kill us makes us stronger. Smile smile smile.

Phyllis ~ My daughter has been in the Navy for a little over four years. For those holidays that she hasn't been home, it seems as if one of the officers always invites those sailors who can't go home over for the day. Or a bunch of them get together and attempt to make a Thanksgiving dinner. Even though it is hard to not have her home, it does make it a little better to know that she is not alone for the holiday.

My husband was a marine from 1983-1990. During that time we only spend 1 full year together. We spend many Thanksgivings and Christmas apart. It's not easy, but it gets better in time. I always spent the holiday with family. I know the feeling. I miss my boys very much. One is at GL and the other is in army boot camp. I spend hours on line watch military videos to help pass time.
