Thanks carol.... Unless the eod's do that job I don't know who will do it. As my dad says, a former navy dude, said the navy always knows what they are doing they just don't do a good job of communicating!

Ben hasn't said anything either. He finishes GL this week, hopefully, and on to SD. I will ask him and a Navy friend. May not be able to find out until tomorrow. What about Dusty who just DEPed into MN and doesn't leave until next July? I really don't think they would DEP someone into a job that is being phased out, doesn't make sense. I will let you ladies know more probably tomorrow.

My son graduated 8/7 for mineman. He is waiting for school to start...who is going to do this job if not the minemen? Sean hasn't said anything about this.

My son graduated from Basic in July. He was to go to TX for A school for MN, then that base closed, so was told would be 3 months in GL then 3 months in SD, now the word is that this job is being phased out, so he is in limbo in GL. Done with basic, now has been just waiting. For what, I am not sure. Would the Navy not have known they were phasing this out when he signed his contract? Thoughts, comments..Thanks!

No we did not stay in Coronado. We stayed in San Diego at the lodge on the corner of Harbor Dr & 28th street. The lodge is on base so we had to get either our son or daughter-in-law to come with us when we checked in, but after that all we had to do is show our drivers license and our lodge registration sheet to get past the guards. We did the 2 hr horn blower harbor tour which was neat because we got to see my sons ship that was in dry dock. We also went down town to Little Italy and ate lunch one day, went to Sea Port Village, the zoo, Disneyland (we had our daughter & 9 month old granddaughter with us) and the Children's museum. We also ate a barbeque place in downtown San Diego called Kansas City Barbeque. After we got there we found out that the sleazy bar scene from the movie Top Gun was filmed there. Our son lives in Chula Vista and the lodge is only about 15 minutes away. The lodge is close to everything except Disneyland. If you do any tours or go any place that you have to buy tickets, have your son go to the NEX and get them. We saved quite a bit of money that way. Also, my son got into Disneyland free.

Hi Eileen,

The Navy Lodge was it the one in Coronado and do you know if that is the only one? What did you guys do? I know there are lots of great restaurants.

I just got back from seeing my son in San Diego. He got back from his deployment in Bahrain on the 15th of July. They gave him almost 2 weeks liberty starting July 29th. We stayed at the Navy lodge there and it was great.

I'll ask Robin tonight about when she starts her class. She had a mix up on her orders. She got 5 travel days to get from Chicago to San Diego and then she put in for 5 leave days. So she thought she had ten days. She messed around with friends in Great Lakes the 1st couple of days and then found out that she had to report for duty in San Diego after the five travel days and then get her 5 days leave! So she has to be in SD Wednesday a.m. She called this afternoon from Vegas. She will be in SD this evening and will call me when she gets there.
