Wamon: Hang in there! It takes a while ofter our sailors switch bases or assingments for them to feel like they are "a part of"...like Cracker says, the whole tune can change in a week! In the mean time Shelia's adivice is probably your best bet....send letters, cards, packages...just stay in contact! This is a hard one.....stay in touch....we really are here for you!

Thanks all for the sweet words about my cutie...I'm a little biased, I know. Can't wait to squeeze him....

CJ, you are always so practical.....and wise.....your advise to wamom is so good.

Julie! What a great surprise!!! So glad for you and Corey...hope this visit is THE greatest for you two, and relieved he gave you a little warning. :)))) Better get the fridge and pantry stocked...I know I've already started for our visit in December.

Wamom, yes this when it is probably harder on us then it really is on them. I had many of those phone calls from one of my sailors. I would hang up with that queazy feeling in my stomach. And by the next time I spoke to them they were fine.
I'm sure it must be a bigger adjustment when you are in a different country and sent right out to sea. Like wise Sheila has said, we just need to be supportive and encourage him. I bet in a few more calls he will be like...."me? I never said those things....gotta go my friends are waiting".

Hang in there, we will be here for you.

Thanks Sheila, he couldn't say where his ship is or for how long but on the official ship website it seemed that it was a short voyage to test things on the ship. I am waiting for him to give me his address so I can start sending things.

Wamom,
It would surprise me if the feelings your sailor has been dealing with haven't been felt by 90% of the sailors that serve. But that "alone" feeling probably comes at different times for each sailor, and individuals manage their feelings in their own way and in their own time. For some, basic training is a very "alone" time...for my sailor, I believe his "on hold" time, waiting for orders to come through was his biggest challenge. I'm glad your sailor has talked to the Chaplain. I'm sure he has given him good advice. If my sailor was feeling this way, I would begin to send cards and letters very often, even though they will take a while to arrive, he will be reminded that you care. These are times that try us, because all we can do is pray and be supportive. When you say he was "out to sea"...is he deployed? If so, as you encourage him, remind him of the great personality he has, and how his natural friendliness is one of his greatest strengths right now....send care packages with items for him to share with others...that will help him "break the ice" so to speak. Wamom...hang in there, and we're here for you! OK, Navy Moms and PNBM.....we need you guys to weigh in here!

Hi all, I posted on the Japan group but I get great advice from this group so I thought I would share with you also. My son left here a week ago Wednesday after a two week leave. He had PIR on 9/3. He left on a Wednesday and arrived in Japan and was out to sea on Saturday. He was fine at home and seemed to be doing well with the Navy experience. We have received a few phone calls and he sounds horrible. He says he has never felt so alone. He wonders if he has made a huge mistake. I am trying to be as encouraging as possible. He says the work and people are fine he just feels completely alone. He has talked with the chaplain. Is this normal? Should I worry? Do you have any advice for him? He is very social and I think once he makes friends he will feel better. He says he can't imagine being like this for four years. Other than GL he has never been away from home for very long so maybe be is just homesick. I would love any advice you can share with me.

Patti: Glad Wes is doing well and likes San Diego. Phoenix is about 8 hours from San Diego....if he'll be passing through on his way home for New Years and wants a place to crash let me know.....I'm about 10 minutes off of I-10. As it get closer remind me to send you my phone #'s sohe at least has a contact here.

Got a call from Cory last night......he'll be in next Friday.....YEP, Friday the 13th! With the short notice I'm going to have to rearrange a few things on my schedule. I had offered to work on the 21st for another nurse who has a family wedding....and that will be the day Cory flys back to Virgina! I think he was planning to surprise me, not realizing I do other things than just sit around the house waiting for him to come home!!! It'll all work out, just have to address it at work on Monday and hopefully find someone to cover that day. The day after he comes in (Saturday) is the DEP picnic in Tucson and ,of course, I've offered to be the driver for some moms from Phoenix....so I will do that. I'm sure he'll be spending his 1sr day with friends anyway.

Shelia: GREAT pictures of Martin! Good-looking kid you have there!!

Molly: Tucker is certainly going to see the world....aced a test, got a terrific assignment....WOW!!! Let us know when he's coming home.
