Dumb time of year to join a garden group, but here I am. Live in Northern Michigan. Zone 4/5. Four if you live inland, five if near the water. I'm more 5.
Grow vegetables and ornamentals with a whole lot of Mother Nature left to run.
I hate green grass lawns--biological deserts. Actually deserts have more diversity!
The God in the joke would love my yard!
To top it all off, I live in an oak forest. Lots of shade, leaves that take forever to compost and plenty of deer to eat what I can manage to grow. But I still love it!

Hi Ladies, Went out today and cut back my roses for next spring. I want them to bush out and not grow so tall. They were done blooming so it was time to cut them back for fall. Just have to cover them up when it starts to get cold. I have mums coming up I planted in the ground last year. They are so pretty blooming now. I got the hardy mums last year when I planted them and they made it threw the winter. I bought two more for his year to plant later for next year to come up. My brothers tomatoes did not do so good this year not like last year. He had very few of them this year. His green peppers are doing great. Hope everyones gardens are growing pretty and strong. Start getting them ready for fall. luv ya all your friend Pam (Alexis step-mom)

Well, I'm really sore today. We picked 1 1/2 bu of beans, some broccoli, jalapeno peppers, tomatoes, and 3 bushel...yes bushel of pickles. So guess what I'm doing tonight besides canning beans? Sweet pickles, 2 different relishes and bread and butter pickles. Hope everyone else's gardens are doing okay.

Good morning Ladies.
I thought you all would like this I found this while searching how to get rid of glover in the lawn.

Yard Work-As Viewed from Heaven
(overheard in a conversation between God and St Francis).

God Hey,St Francis,you know all about gardens and nature;
What in the world is going on down there in the US?
What happened to the dandelions,Violets, thistles and stuff.I started econs ago> I had a perfect no-maintance garden plan.those plants grow in any type soil, withstand drought and multiply with abandon. The nector from the long-lasting blossoms attract butterflies, honeybees and flocks of songbirds.I expected to see a vast garden of color by now.All I see are patches of green.

St Francis: It's the tribes that settled there,Lord. They are called the Suburbanites. They started calling your flowers 'Weeds' and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass

God: Grass? But it is so boring,it's not colorful. It doesn't attract butterflies, bees or songbirds, only grabs and sod worms. It's temperamental with temperatures. Do these Suburbanites really want to grow this?

St Francis: Apparently not,Lord. As soon as it has grown a little, they cut it....sometimes 2 times a week.

God: They cut it?Do they bale it like hay?

St Francis: Not exactly,Lord. Most of them rake it and put it in bags.

God: They bag it?Why? Is it a cash crop?Do they sell it?

St Francis: No sir, just the opposite. They pay to throw it away.

God: Now let me get this straight, they fertilize it to make it grow and when it does grow, they cut it off and pay to throw it away?

St.Francis: Yes sir.

God:These Suburbanites must be relieved in the summer when we cut back on the rain and turn up the heat. That surely slows the growth and saves them alot of work.

St.Francis: You aren't going to believe this Lord, but when the grass stops growing so fast, they drag out the hoses and pay more money to water it,so they can continue to mow it and pay to get rid of it.

God: What nonsense! At least they kept some trees. That was a sheer stroke of genius,if I do say so myself. The trees grow leaves in the spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the Autumn they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep the moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes.Plus,as they rot the leaves become compost to enhance the soil. It's a natural circle of life.

St.Francis: You better sit down Lord.As soon as the leaves fall, the Suburbanites rake them into great piles and pay to have them haul away.

God: No way. What do they do to protect the shrubs and tree roots in the winter to keep the soil moist and loose?

St Francis:After throwing the leaves away, they got out and buy something called mulch. They haul it home and spread it around in place of the leaves.

God: And where do they get this mulch?

St Francis They cut down the trees and grind them up to make mulch.

God: Enough.I don't want to think about this anymore. Saint Catherine, you're in charge of the arts. What movie have you scheduled for us tonight?

St Catherine: 'Dumb and Dumber',Lord. It's a really stupid movie about....

God: Never mind...I think I just heard the whole story from Saint Francis!

I hope you all enjoyed it.

Only my pepper plants are doing well. I got 2 feet high tomato plants with tomatoes on them from Lowes over the weekend for $1.00 each. I think I will leave them in the pots. They are in fairly large pots. So at least I will have green peppers and tomatoes. Hopefully next year will be better.

How's everyone's gardens doing? I finally got the rest of my 12 flats of flowers planted. We had some plans to landscape but they fell through so I had to plant flowers instead. Luckily, the last 6 flats were a lot cheaper since it's the end of the season. Our beans are blossomed so can't wait to pick them. Our pickles are running and corn is one schedule (knee high by 4th of July). But gardens around here aren't doing as well as normal...must be the cool weather. Ruth VH, Caledonia, MI
