Navy For Moms

This is just an FYI for those whose children have volunteered for Sub Duty after they have finished with Nuke School.

Unfortunately they dont send the Nukes to Sub School so they do not get their ears pressure tested nor do they have the opportunity to be on a sub for a trial period to see if they can handle being underwater and in an atmosphere that has less oxygen.  This is such a shame that the Navy does not make sure these kids are actually compatable with Sub duty before they throw them out there.  It is also very unfortunate for some of our kids who are doing their very best to serve there country to the best of their ability and then they get assigned to ships whose command is less than it should be.  If they Nuke has trouble acclimating to the work enviornment on a sub and is unable to deal with being underwater in tight spaces with less than normal oxygen levels they will not help them.  They will belittle them, take their scriptures away from them and other personal belongings, and make sure they are sleep deprived by working them 18 hours a day and then assigning other duties so they get only 2 to 3 hours of sleep a night to try to force them to deal with the duties on a sub.  Even when they have informed their superiors that they are having fears while underwater and that it is affecting their job and their mental stability.  THERE IS A REASON WHY SUB DUTY IS STRICTLY VOLUNTEER!  You would then imagine that if you couldn't handle that enviornment that you could unvolunteer with out fear of being repremanded or threatend with expulsion from the Navy.  Unfortunately that is not the case!  Please make sure your children know that once they volunteer for sub duty and are assigned to a sub if they cant handle it they are in deep "doo-doo".

Disapointing to see "shame" and Navy in the same paragraph! Mom of a Nuke and quite a few sailors in our family, including ones that have served on a sub who have a diffrent view. THE NAVY IS STRICTLY VOLUNTEER AS WELL.
yes it is very disapointing to me as well. My son, his dad, one of his brothers and his brother in law are all Navy men who have Volunteered to serve this country in the Navy! They have done and continue to do so proudly! Make no mistake! Two are Nuclear Officers! My other son is in the Air Force. We are a military family so yes it is really a shame to have one of them treated so disrepectfully!
The recruiter required my sailor to volunteer for subs in order to enter the nuke program. Whether or not he will be assigned to subs (his preference) or carriers is yet to be determined. That's assuming graduation from NPTC of course.
I hope for your son he does well at the NPTC...I also hope he gets the type of assignment he prefers. Sub duty isnt for everyone. That does not mean those who are not suited for sub duty are not good men. Being on a sub is not for everyone. Just like being in the military is not for everyone. We have 21 members of our family who have served or are currently serving in the military. They have or are in the Seals, Black Opps (Delta Force), Special Forces, Cryptological Language Specialists, Black Hawk Pilots, Weapons Specialists, SWO's, Nuclear and various other positions in the Air Force, Navy and Army. This is the first time we have had this type of experience with the military.
We were told by the recruiting station that there is a sub prep school that they are required to go to that is approximately 2 weeks long and is up in Groton where they are put through some paces to make sure they are the right mind-set to go sub. Did that not ever happen or have you ever heard of that?
Unfortunately that is not so for NUKES. They just send them directly to the Sub and from there it is hit n miss...
In prototype they work in a pressurized area like in a sub. My son says his ears hurt a little and gets some getting used to. Nukes DO NOT attend the sub school in Gorton but other rates do. Most Recruiters don't know or educate themselves as to the Nuke training. Our recruiter didn't know much but my son was recruited for nukes at MEPS when he took his ASVAB test and was given the information as an option to consider.
