jmc18, i can definitely relate to that feeling the first time your son is not home for their birthday. My son was in SC away from home for his 22nd birthday and I was going crazy so his father, girlfriend, and I went down to see him and spent the day with him but it wasn't the same as being home. This past year was the official first birthday that he was not home or we were not with him on his birthday and it was heart breaking. I too never thought 23 years ago that my son would be where he is today because he is any only child and has been spoiled rotten but funny how quick they change when they make the decision to join the military. Hang in there and thanks for the beautiful comment that you wrote. God bless you and all of our sailors and their friends and families.

jmc- i agree, beautifully stated. My son will turn 21 in September and it will be his 4th away from home. Wish I could tell you it gets easier. Nate turned 18 when he was at boot camp - that was by far the worst, because we couldn't even talk to him or send him anything. Be happy for him and celebrate when you do finally have him home.

You touched my heart jmc18.....my son will also turn 20 soon. I NEVER would have thought he would be where he is today. Thank goodness for this site and people like you who share your thoughts.

beautifully said jmc18. My son's birthday is still a couple months away, but I've been thinking much the same thing lately.

Hi
Sitting here and realizing that one week from tomorrow is my sons 20th birthday. I realize that this is the first time he has not been home for his birthday. This must be one of those moments when you stop and take count of how much life has changed. It also seems to be a time to reflect on the past and all the good things that were and look to the future to all the wonderful things that are going to happen. It will be a year August 20 that he left for boot camp, how time has flown and at the same time traveled slowly, each delivery, each call, each letter and achievement a notch on the heart and a memory to cherish. If any one had told me 20 years ago when that 10 pound little man was born that he would be where he is today i would have laughed and said that he was to spoiled, he could never leave his mom. How wrong we are about things, but thank God we are and that things are not always the way we plan. Pride, joy, fear, and all the other emotions we have fill the small holes that are in our hearts that appear when they walk away from us to enter this world that we dont understand. God bless my boy, and all the other men and women who are selflessly serving our country. God bless the moms, dads, spouses and extended family who pray, encourage, cry, and all the many other duties that are performed daily. The Navy, what a great place to be. Good Night.

Christina, your boyfriend will get weekend liberties after he "phases up" - in about 4 - 5 weeks. That's when they can wear civilian clothes, and travel up to a certain mileage away from base. I'm not sure about having visitors before he phases up.

Elaine, I'm glad they are having your son start over in a month. My son Alex had his appendix out. Although he was physically in good shape in a week or so, he still got tired easily and wasn't quite himself for a couple of weeks. I think he'll do a lot better dealing with the stress of prototype if he has some time to rest and get back into fighting shape as it were. The Navy takes very good care of their Nukes.

Hey Elaine, that is great news that your son is going to be able to start over. It probably is frustrating to have to start over but at least he won't be behind and have to try and catch up. I hope he recovers fast and keep us updated on his progress. See you over on FB
