You and he won't know until sometime on the day he checks in, and he probably won't know until later in the day, when he's talked to the right people. He would have to take leave for sure; the day after Thanksgiving is not a federal holiday. Normally, commands will grant "liberal leave" on that day, meaning that everyone who wants leave, and is not in that day's duty section will be authorized to take it. Since he probably won't be assigned a duty section on the first day of check-in (he won't be qualified to stand any watch on duty that quickly) - that part shouldn't be a problem. The main risk you'd be running in buying the ticket ahead of time is that they're not organized well-enough to get him all checked in, and a leave request processed on a day when a lot of people on board are likely to be missing, having returned from sea only the day before. Good luck - hopefully somebody with more first-hand knowledge will be able to respond...

My son is to report for his first assignment...to Bremerton Washington...the day before Thanksgiving...does anyone know if they will say hello and then tell him he has 4 days off for the Holiday??? I'm 1200 miles away in So Calif but he could make plans to fly home if we thought that would happen. The carrier is out to sea until 11/24 - he called...thank you!!!

My nephew is in 906, doing very well and loving it. LOL, that's about all, he's not keen on me sharing online about him, even if he is doing great!

Le Anne when did your Nuke start Power School? If he is in class 906-"x" then his Power School Grad will be Jan. 22nd. They started end of July/beginning August.

I too am praying for all our sailors taking comps this Tuesday, and ask that those of you who have been there (and those that will be soon) will join us as we lift them up during this stressful and important time. I look forward to meeting many of you this week-end! God Bless

To Jane:

This isn't going to make sense to you, but tell your son this. He'll understand. When he takes the comp, he can't guess the answer based on the point value like he could the whole way through the program. NPS COMP is written like a NPTU exam, where points are awarded based on ACTUAL question difficulty, not the amount of knowledge required.

Translation: In A school/power school, its pretty easy to gauge how information to write based on the question. You get pretty good at going, well the question asks this and is worth 23 points. So i'm going to write 23 points worth of words on the page. on COMP however, you could write an entire page for 1.5 points, and then the next question is worth 7 points, and has a one word answer.

Good luck to all!

Prayers for all our sailors taking Power School comps on Tuesday. And prayers to all traveling to GC for the 11/20 Power School graduation. I will be there and get to see my sailor for 4 days. Then he is off to Ballston Spa to find a home, and then he comes home for a week over Thanksgiving! Can't wait! I look forward to meeting all the Moms that will be there on the 20th!

I'm pretty sure that most last-minute openings come up when a prospective recruit reneges on their commitment at the last minute before leaving for boot camp. Most probably don't know that despite what recruiters would have you believe, a recruit is not truly committed until their swear-in the morning they depart for boot camp at MEPS. The first swearing-in ceremony that many parents see is just for the inactive reserve, not for active duty, so is purely ceremonial. So - this should help explain why the recruit taking a spot like this has to be ready to leave at the drop of a hat.
