Hello Fellow October Moms,

My son is scheduled to leave 10/23.  Am stymied about when PIR might occur since Christmas is on a Wednesday this year.  Any experienced folks have any toughts on this?  Guess we need to learn to be flexible, but it's challenging!

Thanks!

Welcome GennyMac and Bethin NY!

October DEP'ers (and October Moms) always have a bit more planning than the other deployment months because we get to try to schedule attending PIR (graduation) around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Chicago in the winter!!

Good luck to you and your sailors-to-be, have fun reading this group's history, and if you have any specific questions - please ask!!

Hello All - Just joined and am a complete NEWBIE and have had no experience with the military at all.  My son has been given a ship date for October 1, 2013.  He then goes to BUDS pre-qual or prep school (I think its also A school) so trying to get up to speed fast fast fast.  He's already hooked up with another DEPPER locally who is going at the same time, so at least he's got a bud to hang with at PST and train with prior to shipping out.  Looking forward to getting to know everyone - it will be so cool to meet some of you at Graduation too.

Ship date for my son is 10/3/13 -seems like a long time from now, but I bet it will fly by quickly, just like the last 21 years.  Looking forward to "meeting" other Oct Moms.

Thanks Kendrasue. It is quiet for sure, and reading everyone elses posts I am sure it will get busier once we get closer to October.

Welcome JenB!  This group gets pretty quiet during this part of the year, but we pick up as we get closer to October!  Let us know if you have any questions (or just need a virtual hug) =)

10/22/13 is the date given by the recruiter for ship date... reading all I can on how to prepare for that day. I know we have a few months, but it will go so fast, especially since my son graduates high school in May!

Trisha - that's exciting news for you and your sailor!  Enjoy your visit :)

Just a little update. The Iwo Jima pulled into port on 12/20!! So happy seeing that ship come around the bay into sight. Like nothing I have ever experienced before. Hundreds of Sailors manning the rails in their dress blues. So cold, but my heart was so warm!! Bravo Zulu to the crew of the USS Iwo Jima on a successful nine month deployment. Hanging out here in Norfolk still to spend some time with my girl!

Hopper mom - I hope you were able to work things out and pick up your sailor!

Lynn, prayers for Geoff, that things work out for him (would he rather be out sooner?)

Trisha - I'm sorry Ashley's deployment was extended, hopefully the everything will just calm down peacefully (and bring everyone home safely)
