Judi,
many people do drive it. I would also suggest watching flights on travelocity.com. when I go see Kas it varies greatly day to day. when I first looked for flights to go T-giving weekend they were over $500 for round trip out of Pittsburgh. a few days later I got them for $300. she is in Norfolk by the way. I understand that may also be to much for some but just want to let you know that they do change daily. but it is definately worth whichever works to go to PIR

Judi, we drove also. I live above Doyelstown, Pa and flying was out of the question financial wise. We left early Thursday morning and split the driving, taking our time. We spent 3 nights up there and then drove straight through coming home on Sunday morning. It was a pain in the butt to do but well worth it! I'd go for it!

Judy-
We drove to great lakes-
Had a caravan, my folks (the grands) came to my house from Long Island.
They stayed the night, and we all trailed to Great Lakes for his PIR.
we stayed overnight on the road, but driving home we did it in a straight shot- Mom and dad stopped on the way back as well-
We didn't really have the extra cash, so we split the driving and did it in one go- not something I would recomment, but it was do-able

I live right on the Delaware in N.J. Grandson Nik pir 12/24. Flights for that week expensive. He leaves the 25th for Fla.It's hard with 5 other little ones at home to be gone at that time. His parents are torn on what to do. We'll figure something out.

it has been a while since I posted on N4M's and I miss it! This site has been a life saver especially when my son was in Boot Camp! PIR was back in June and we haven't seen our son since then! We do get to hear from him when he calls and emails...and we just found out he will be home for Christmas! This is the first time he will be home since he left for Boot Camp in April!
This site is a great lifeline for all stages of our sons and daughters enlistment and active duty and all I can say is hello and welcome!

to Berta's mom -

My son left for BC on August 27th and I can answer you question. They picked my son up the night before and he stayed and the Base in Moon overnight. The next morning they bussed him to the Federal Building in downtown Pittsburgh. We were able to go and see him re-sworn in with the others being deployed that day. Anyone can go see the swearing in ceremony. This ceremony was for all branches so there was more than Navy people there. You can take pictures throughout the ceremony. It is in this little room. Then after the ceremony you can say your goodbyes there. From there they will take them to the Pittsburgh Airport where they fly to Chicago. When they get to Chicago they will meet up with others from around the country that will be entering BC at the same time they are. They ( people from RTC) will bus them to GL and when they arrive in GL they will get 1 phone call home with will last all of 1-2 minutes or as long as it takes to say "I am here and I will call you again in 2 weeks when I ge phone privileges". They can have their cell phone up until when they get re-sworn in. My son had his at the Base the night they picked him up, and then he gave it to me along with his IPod after the re-swearing in ceremony as we were saying our goodbyes. I sent him with an calling card that had 1200 minutes on it. Their plane did not leave Pittsburgh until 7 pm that night. While he was waiting at the Pittsburgh Airport he called me fro a pay phone. Once they arrive in Chicago their butt's are the Navy's then. Be prepared after the initial phone call home to say they arrived until you get the first letter from them is about 2 weeks. I wish I had found this site when he first left for BC. I did not discover it until the week of his PIR. I saw it as an advertisement during the Biggest Loser Show. I love it and am on here several times a day and have joined several groups. If she is not leaving until the 24th of this month that means she will not be home for Christmas. But all of us here on N4Ms website are here for you.
