I received my flag also. I was wondering if it is just for Army or all folks who serve. Wondering cuz all the info was Army.
I did talk with Jason last night and he is "on hold" until sometime in Jan. He is basically doing nothing. I asked him if he had watch and he just said "nope" so I don't know what the heck he is doing. He was in SC with a friend visiting with the friends family. I have been told that when Jas gets on the sub he may be Hot Boxing (or something like that). Meaning he will be sharing a bunk with 2 other guys. One gets up, one goes to sleep, etc. I just think ICK. He will have a small drawer for his stuff and that is about it. I guess as he moves up, he will get a bunk of his own.
I have been asking Jas for his address since he got there and well, I am sure you all know how that is going.
I did talk with Ellen and Steve is not going to buy her a townhouse like it was originally planned but she is renting a townhouse for 2 other girls. It comes fully furnished. She said it is really nice.
The weather is beautiful here. Sure wish I wasn't in He** working.

Got my blue star flag from Grantham university on Saturday. Very nice, hung it in my window. Haven't heard from Derek since they left out to sea. I think he could eamil me but maybe he is so tired? Hoping to send him a thanksgiving box, better do it soon. I don't think he can have comforters or many things like from h ome when you are on a ship. they have their bunk and maybe a locker? I suppose your sons still in school or like Jason now in an apartment can have that but when real life navy happens, don'tthink you can keep all that stuff.
have a good day and Joanne, sure hope you are feeling better, sounds like the flu!

Hi Dana! Yes, come on as often as you can. We find compfort in talking with each other, updating each other on what we and our sailor's are doing, and comparing notes. I agree....the "budgeting" thing is difficult for most (my son included). The taxi fair alone eats up quite a bit of their paycheck (if they don't have a car or a friend with a car). Glad you came back on here with us. Stay in touch, when you can! : )

Good morning, everyone.
So -- I've been catching up on the older posts (I needed to go back to August 6th!) -- and I'm up to Sept. 28th. Making some progress. I see there are a faithful few of you still writing back and forth, and it gladdens my heart. I wish I could be on here more often, but my excuses are work-related and when I get home I just want to crash with my husband. Being able to talk with Matt a few times a week helps, too. But now, having read through six weeks of your posts, I realize I should check in more often.

For instance, the food thing -- that was a surprise to us, too, that the sailors are charged for using the galley. I know it's less expensive than eating out, but Matt says he'd have to stand in line for an hour that he doesn't have in order to get food. Of course, officers go to the head of the line, which he understands, but then he has to step out of line because he needs to get to class or report for duty. Not cool. I like the idea of sending him gift cards for Subway, etc. I think I'll head out today to get him some.

We sent him his own comforter (made by Grandma) a few weeks ago, because he said it was getting cold in CT. We've sent him quite a few of his favorite things, and the shipping costs are a killer. But it's worth it to hear how thrilled he is to get his things (books and favorite t-shirts and stuff). The last care package was just before Halloween, so his dad put in some Jelly Belly's and I tucked in a box of Rice Krispie treats. He was thrilled! It's the little things that make a difference, I think.

I think the money/budget thing is difficult for them all. I know for Matt, this is his first 'adult' experience. He moved from our house to basic training. We're still able to help him out of a jam, but we'd rather he learn what it means to watch a whole paycheck go to pay all your bills and have nothing left to 'play' with. It's a hard lesson to learn to budget, but better now than later when he has a wife and kids to support.

I've enjoyed seeing everyone's pictures and posts, and I'll try to get through to current day's posts soon. Right now, laundry beckons. Then we're off to a fundraiser dinner auction event for our local food bank tonight.

Blessings to all!
Dana

I have only talked to Jason once since he arrived in Kings Bay. He said is apt is great. He was in Jacksonville with some friends at the time. Nothing new here - I have called him and he hasn't called me back. So he is busy with school or out having fun.

Hi Joanne- they had a small ceremony at his school in SC, but we didn't go. When he graduates from Power School (the 2nd school- 6 months long), we will most likely make the trip for that as it is supposed to be really nice. How is Jas doing?

Hi Dana! I have checked your page several times but I saw no activity, so I didn't leave a comment. Try to get on here and connect with us....we still keep other "sane" during all these changes our sailors are experiencing! Glad Matt is doing so well. Jared will graduate from his A School this Friday! He will be driving home for the Thanksgiving break and he will be flying home for Christmas as his school closes down from Dec. 16-Jan. 3rd. So glad you will be seeing Matt for the Christmas break. Wow! You haven't seen Matt since he left for BC in April? I just saw Jared at PIR for about 2 hours total as he was grad n go. This will really be a huge "home coming" event for your family!!!! Do you know about the FREE military banner you can order for his return home? I got one for Jared and it only cost me $13 for shipping and that was it. It has his Navy photo on it, too! Very cool and I can't wait to display it! Let me know if you want the info. to order one. I actually got mine in like 2 weeks. Glad you came on here to update us. Come back soon!!!!! : )
