CORTRAMID - our son went to Norfolk for ships (on a destroyer), Camp Lejune (Marines), Kings Bay, GA, for subs, and I think he just moved across the base at Norfolk for his air week (it's a big combined base - NOB and NAS (Naval Operations Base and Naval Air Station) Norfolk. That was four weeks. 2nd class cruise he flew to Hawaii, caught a sub going to Bremerton, did a two week underway period aboard the sub and then came home (about 3 weeks). Other mids from his unit have gone to San Diego and Singapore, and some have been on board carriers. (that's based on some pictures I have seen!)

My son left last Thursday for his CORTRAMID EAST cruise and he is with the Marines this week, then back to Norfolk for the aviation portion, the following week, he will be at Kings Bay for subs and then finally back to Norfolk for surface week. He was looking forward to this week with the Marines as they are more physical than the others. He wants to do subs, so he really should enjoy that week. This cruise allows them to become acquainted with each area and assists them with their decision later in which community they wish to serve. We cannot wait to hear of all his adventures!---------Lisa

Thanks! what does CORTRAMID stand for?

sorry!! it stands for Career Orientation and Training for Midshipmen. Mids from the Naval Academy do essentially the same thing one summer, but it is called PROTRAMID.

CORTRAMID - our son went to Norfolk, daughter to San Diego. 2nd class cruise - honestly don't remember. 1st Class cruise, son went to subs, daughter to Spain. 2nd Class and 1st Class cruises can be anywhere there is a Navy base.

Though we live on the East coast and my son goes to school on the East coast, he went to Cortramid last summer in San Diego. he had to do this because he took a course at a local college, to get an undergraduate requirement out of the way and open up his college schedule a bit. he loved it.

My son missed CORTRAMID because he had a sprained ankle! 2nd Class he did subs and this summer he is doing EOD . . . something I know nothing about. Does anyone know about the EOD training?

My Son spent a few weeks last summer in VA doing EOD training. He really enjoyed it and felt it gave him enough insight into the sp operations that he could make a career decision. Depending on the assignment they get they will do a lot of different things from guns to lots of swimming. The navy had him stay in a hotel because there was not enough housing, but that really did not negatively impact the time spent. By the way, he did not go SEALS or EOD, he ended up choosing aviation...they really have lots of choices!

First year cruise is 4 weeks long spending one week experiencing each of the four communities: Our son, Like Beth's, spent his cruises between Camp Lejune and Norfolk.
Second year cruise was 4 at Norfolk where he did a lot of fire prevention and maintenance before going out on the ship for one week.
Third year cruise, he flew to Groton CT and did a 4 week stint on a sub. They had to pull into Cape Canaveral for repairs and got a day off and went to Disney where I believe he got in free showing his military ID. They went back out to see and spent a couple days in Bermuda, then flew home (Atlanta).
It sounds like each is the same yet different.

My son is in his senior year and will be graduating, receiving commission and going down to Pen-cola as his service selection assignment is aviator. His first summer cruise was CORTRAMID in San Diego doing the community split. His second cruise was trip to Andros Island in the Bahama's where he caught a nuc sub for a couple of weeks. This past summer he spent one month back in San Diego assigned to one of the helo units. He practiced simulator and then actually let him "take the stick" on some flights. Had a great experiences - most never get the opportunity to do in a lifetime.

My sons third class "cruise" was Cortrmid same as Beth hokiemom's son, Then his second class cruise was on a carrier off Norfolk which pretty much did not go 'underway' except for a few days and that was about a month and his first class cruise was a frigate from HI and he participated in RIMPAC and was again gone for about a month. He loved all of them except for the short period when he was in the sub - he likes seeing the sun too much, I guess...
