Navy For Moms

Hi,

I just thought I would start a post to see what schools your kids would be going to for NROTC. Who knows, maybe some of us will have kids at the same school!

My son Tyler will be leaving for Xavier University, which does its NROTC program through Tulane University. He will be a freshman this coming year.

Hi... this is my first day on the site. My son, Jeff will be going to University of Minnesota. I feel so lost right now - not knowing what to expect. Glad to have a place to fit in.

Hi Julie- Welcome to the NROTC group and congratulations to your son. You are in the right place
to get your questions answered and find a lot of other moms in the same position you are :)
My daughter just finished her first year of NROTC and I can't believe how fast and how much we learned
during that time.

Thanks Paulette for starting this up... I'm looking forward to the support and wisdom from others. I'm already feeling a little more peace with just being connected.

Happy Mother's Day!

Julie, my son will be going to Macalester college, but will be in the University of Minnesota NROTC unit. Was the University of Minnesota your son's first choice? We haven't really heard much from the unit yet....how about you? Feel free to send me an email and we can support each other through this process at University of Minnesota!

How cool... This is awesome to finally have a true connection.
We are just like you - no real communication with the unit. I'm really nervous. We are in the process of trying to figure out what all we are responsible to do. We didn't expect to go this route... he had a Nomination to USNA too and didn't get an appointment so we've been thrown into a new path which we were unprepared for. I am glad to have my son for 4 more years instead of feeling like I will loose him immediately to the Navy. Univ of MN was my son's 3rd choice. His first was Texas A&M - which most of his friends will be attending but he has a great attitude... saying "I'm ready for my adventure". At A&M they assign everything in the Corp of Cadets so you don't have much to do - they make the decisions. I'm totally lost with it being so different up there. We have some family in Central Minnesota and we have spent alot of time up there on the family lake... so it's not like we are sending him to the unknown without any life line. That's a little more comforting.
My son plays football and is thinking about trying to walk on the Wrestling team (he wrestled 4 years in H.S.) His major was supposed to be Aeronautical Engineering but he didn't get that because of lower calculus grades - so he's majoring in Physics with the hope of transferring when he proves himslef.
Any similarities in our kids? Where are you guys from? How did you end up going to Minnesota?

We're from Milwaukee. University of Minnesota is one of the first places that kids from Wisconsin apply to because we've got tuition reciprocity and it is actually a little bit less expensive than attending University of Wisconsin-Madison. Although he was accepted at UM, my son will be attending Macalester College, a small liberal arts college about five miles from the University of Minnesota. He is interested in economics/international studies. His scholarship is for a 'tier 3' major, so he isn't locked into a technical field. He isn't interested in engineering, although he has been involved in youth robotics for the past 8 years and his dad is an engineer! Oh, well.

Once he found out in late March that he was accepted to Carnegie Mellon, David tried to get his scholarship switched to the CMU unit, but it already had a waiting list of 15 kids at the time he inquired about it. So Minnesota here he comes!

My son is not an athlete, although he did play football for a few years. Will your son be playing football for Minnesota?

Tell him that he must start running NOW!!! (BTW - I lived in Maple Grove for 7 yrs..........he'll be running in the snow, too, as you know)

My son will be attending The Citadel in the fall. We are starting to get all kinds of information and starting to feel a bit overwhelmed. I think once we sit down and sort through everything it will all start to make sense.
