I shared this thread with my son too and he thought that it was nice that others could learn from his experience. After seeing at the photo posted by Barb, he also thought that it was very nice that pretty girls also join NROTC! (Understand that my son has spent his high school years attending an all-male, Jesuit school!)

Barb, that picture is wonderful! I've been in touch with our son's recruiter, and they will hopefully present the scholarship at a small ceremony we'll have at home on June 6 (we homeschool). It will be the kickoff to a big graduation party, and we are looking forward to the Navy being represented!

Chalk this one up to Navy for Moms or maybe it should be MOMS FOR NAVY! Way to go Paulette for getting us together and for Susan helping us all out. I too made some calls to make sure the Navy is involved in the awards ceremony for my son... I'll keep you posted... it is on the 22nd!

Just wanted to thank Susan again for "venting" about her son's award ceremony. Because she did, I was able to make sure that the local recruiter was there to present my daughter's scholarship. He made a very nice, brief speech about how competitive the application process is and what an honor it is for the recipients to receive it. And I also think you are all right...I probably would have been more disappointed than she would have been if no one had shown up!

I thought the same as you Daria... figured he was in for a rude awakening, room checks etc.. Summer Contramid in San Diego, I thought he would be in a barracks and have to learn how to make a bed. I was wrong. They treated him as an officer, he had maid service. He only had to do his own laundry and ironing. Maid cleaned his room and made his bed. He had it better there than at home!

I think my son befriended the gunney and they played intermural hockey together.

Daria, I think you are right that this sort of thing bothers moms more than kids... I'm pretty sure that my son has moved on to thinking about the fact that he has just two regular days left of school, a senior day at the amusement park on Friday, and then finals next week!

hi,
When my older son received his scholarship, no one came or even mentioned the possibility of coming. However when my other son 2 years later received his the Navy called me & asked how to get in contact with the school to present it to him. I guess it depends on the recruiter in your town or city.

Daria,

When my son earned his NROTC scholarship, the Navy didn't send anyone either. That was back in 99. I even called the local commander and asked if they were sending someone to the awards ceremony... but he said they don't do that. I just thought it was our local office, now I believe it's a Navy thing.

When a friend of my daughters was accepted to the Naval Academy and was planning to go Marine option... the Marines came and made a big deal out of the scholarship and how much it was worth etc...

However, our high school did allow the graduates to list scholarships they had earned and when my son walked across the stage, the NROTC scholarship was mentioned.

I work for a small newspaper and we receive announcements all the time about Airforce and Army accomplishments. The Navy didn't even send anything to the local papers when he earned his wings in flight school, and was 1st in his class. He did fill out paperwork that asked if he wanted something in his local newspaper and he said yes, but we never received anything. (of course, Mom got it in! We made a big deal out of it!) We get our military press releases from the Armed Forces News Service. My editor has talked to them several times and they have said that the Navy is not very good about giving them anything... So parents, send it to your local paper anyways! Most of them will publish it!

Hi Susan & Daria,

Sorry to hear that your sons were not given the dignity and honor that they so deserved during their scholarship/award ceremonies. I can totally relate as my daughter experienced the same thing because her school did not even allow outsiders to announce the awards so therefore it was impossible for her Blue & Gold Officer to make the announcement as she had so graciously asked to do. Our schools behavior toward the military is very puzzling to me to say the least but that's just my observation.

Daria, your observation about our NROTC, USNA and BDCP sailors having a job upon their graduation may just be their last laugh!! LOL
