Hey Susan-

Oh no!! How awful. Don't you just hope this will be one of those events that years from now will be "let me tell you a funny story" things. How was your son afterwards? You would think the principal would know enough though about who was handing out such a great scholarship to one of her students !!
It's sort of amazing to me how little is known to some people about ROTC. My daughter told a couple of her classmates that she had decided to apply last year and they in shock said "but I thought you were going to go to college?"

You owe that recruiter and earful I'd say :)

and Welcome Brenda to our NROTC group.

Just had to vent a little bit. A Navy rep was supposed to show up at my son's senior awards night, but never made it. The principal tried to wing it and talked proudly about my son's army rotc scholarship. Army? Geez, I felt so bad for my son...he was so looking forward to some formal acknowledgement of the scholarship. Thanks for letting me vent!

Hi I'm new to this group and have a son at Texas A & M in the Corp of Cadets. He is going on a Nuclear Sub this summer for his cruise and loves the Navy training.

KU stands for University of Kansas at Lawrence. Sorry your daughter will miss the cruise. Drew will be in San Diego this summer with the helo group. Since he is a senior this is his last cruise. He is physic/aerospace engineering which bumps him into 5 years instead of 4 as the extra Navy classes add to curriculum. His buddies are going to P3 in Hawaii. He took a sub out of caribbean last year's cruise. He is ready to wind it all up and grad, and move on down to Pensecola. Anyway looks like the site is picking up!

Hello everyone. I'm new to the NROTC group, but not NROTC. My son - now a jet pilot in Whidbey Island NAS - was in both high school NJROTC and college NROTC. That's 8 years of ROTC. This was the right program for my son ... and his decision. What we especially enjoyed with the NJROTC and ROTC was being able to be a part of it. in H.S. were did fund raising and volunteers for their various events. In college, we were close enough (2-1/4 hours) to go to his sailing regattas and football games - he carried a flag during the opening ceremonies at home games. But, most importantly ROTC helped him confirm his career choice in the Navy.

for Daria - re: communications with home during CORTRAMID Our son did his CORTRAMID 20 minutes from home (he was in Norfolk, we're in Virginia Beach) and I think we heard from him twice in four weeks! They are not always busy, but they may not have email and cell phone access. He had a great time and learned a lot about the options he has in the Navy - he has always wanted to be a pilot, but loved being on a sub, and for this summer's cruise is going to train with Special Warfare/EOD. He's got some decisions to make!
for KathyB. - If your daughter thinks she would like a semi structured environment (kind of like the Academy) she might want to look at Virginia Tech and Texas A&M - the Corps of Cadets students live together, work out together, eat together, etc. just like at the Academy, but they have most of their classes with civilian students. They still have their military and leadership classes with other cadets, and they have to respect the rank and structure of the organization. They have mandatory study hours, close supervision of their academics, parades, formations, and competitions that are all within the Corps structure. I think the environment has been great for my son (at Virginia Tech) over any other university with a Navy ROTC program.

May 5, 2009, Sara Kelly said… Hi,
Sara Kelly here,
Thank you for your note. I am not great with the computer but wil try to respond asap.
I have one son currently on board the USS Donald Cook out of Norfolk VA. My other son is NROTC @ Boston University. He is finishing his junior year. He was accepted into the Nuclear Propulsion Program & will go to Nuke school after graduation next May. My boys loved the program. They are very different individuals & both learned & grew in different ways. If anyone has any questions about NROTC @ B.U. I may be of service. Thanks.

I sorta married the Army, but my heart belongs to the Navy & always has...much to the chagrin of my mother-in-law. Charlie, aka 'Sean's Da' & the LTC, has come around to accept his son's Navy dreams/reality. Charlie grew up in So Cal w/ summers on Balboa Island (setting for 'Arrested Development') sailing boats. We are constantly correcting him re the correct term, ships v boats . All in all tho...Army Da is bustin' w/ pride re his Ensign. And the AFA Cadets? Well, that's that institution in the funny blue w/ the grumbling Cadets that the Navy beats up on in football each Fall.
; -) No matter, we are thrilled to be associated w/ each of the branches, but...GO NAVY!!!
