The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Does anyone know when the Nattional Geographic article on the SeaBees comes out? Or was it a TV program and when it will air?

Had a short email from him today - he's at a new location with some internet. His message was they're helping to improve conditions for hard working marines. Makes me very proud of all of our Seabees!

Concerned that he hasn't received any of the boxes that have been sent, including the box for his birthday sent in October! I'm not surprised that he hasn't received the boxes sent for Christmas - hopefully things will catch up with him sooner or later!
Hope everyone has a great day!

This is my first deployment too - my son's been in Afg. since Sept. Right now he's with a detachment and doesn't have internet connection. He does get to make short phone calls that all go to his wife. We did find that his phone card is almost out so he was only making one call a week instead of the three he's allowed and my understanding is, the connect drops during the calls he does make. We've sent a few boxes, some with snacks and the few things he's requested - a phone card, carpenters pencils, a head lamp, band-aids, small alarm clock. He really hasn't asked for much.

It is hard not knowing where he is, what he's doing and only getting second hand information, not that they can give much information about where they are anyway. Hopefully he'll be back where he has internet connection soon. The holidays will be hard, but I just keep in mind he's doing what he really wants to do! Hang in there!!

JC, my son is there now. It helps that he is in a place where he has access to the internet and I have been able to email back and forth and also chat with him online through our facebook. I have also sent he several packages of stuff from home, mostly snacks he likes to eat (little debbie cakes, rice krispies) but also some personal hygene things. Hopefully he will be able to let you know what he needs when he deploys. It has helped me to feel useful.

My oldest son is a teacher and at his high school the students are writing cards to send to service/military personnel and several of his students have written to his brother the Navy man.

I agree with drewsmom, check out the Molly's Adopt a Sailor, it is a great project.

JC - welcome to our blog and our community. My son is due to deploy soon so I can imagine what your heart feels like - I've been having these feelings since I discovered he was deploying almost a year ago. I am also new to the deployment thing, but you will find a group of really wonderful mothers here who are either in your shoes or have recently been there. If you look back through the blog toward the beginning of the month, you will find comments about a group (Molly's Adopt a Sailor Project) that is adopting for Christmas one of our Seabee batts. It could be your son's. I've gone back and copied the link for you here:

Hang in there, mom, we are all with you in thought and prayers. As a community we stay strong. It's a wonderful group of ladies. God bless you and keep you and your son!

Oh, almost forgot....if you go back to the beginning of the month, you will also see postings about mailing packages to your son and a link for the Red Cross that sends packages for Christmas. Take care and remember to post here if you discover anything new.
