Your welcome Pooky I hope that he will have a wonderful career just like my son has had in the Navy. I am very glad that he went in the Navy. He has done so much and made Chief just like his grandfather. Best of luck to your son.

Thanks Maria. I am just hoping he gets to do and see something of the world. His father wasnt subs, but loved to tell the stories of all the places he has been and things he has seen. Just want him to do some of that, but dont want him out all the time.

Pooky they are all nuclear subs. A boomer is the big subs that go out 3 months at a time they have 2 crews one crew is in port when the other crew is out. One is the Blue and the other is the Gold crew. The smaller subs they only have one crew. The attack subs when they go out they might be gone for 6 months they go all over. Boomers don't go to a lot of places they just sit when they go out. They have the Trident missiles on them. I hope this answers your questions.

I am wondering about whether he will be on nuclear subs or "boomers". He seems to be sure he will only be on nuclear. Or will he be on both? How is this decided?

My son did mention that also, Pooky; I just forgot. We teased him when he was told he would be ET Nav by asking him if the Navy knew what kind of driver he was!!! He just laughed at us. He is not a bad driver just drives his cars a little faster than Mom likes (as most young boys and girls do).

I just spoke with my son on the phone. He called to see how I am doing (I had outpatient surgery earlier this week) and to ask about our plans to visit him in HI during the holidays. He has just been certified for scuba diving and has a new love. Have a great weekend!

It all sounds great. I also heard that all ET/Nav will also have to learn to be Asst Navigator. Sounds like that is what Maria's son was doing. I dont know who is more exited about all this, me or him.

Pooky - My son is an ET-Nav who enlisted 10/10/06.....tomorrow is his 3rd anniversary with the Navy. He graduated Sub School 1 year and 1 day after he enlisted. He was ACU (awaiting class up) for a couple of weeks (2 or 3) at one time, so your son could finish in less than 1 year. Just depends on how things go. ACU is when there are not enough sailors to make a full class; so they have to wait for more sailors to reach that point. Good Luck! My son does like his job, even though it was his 2nd choice. Turns out it is the right one!

It is computer and maps. So he will have to learn the maps beside learning the computers. At times too he will drive the boat Charles drove the boat around the tip of South America and said it was like riding a roller coaster. It will take your son time but he will learn everything. Charlie started out on attack sub and the last few years he has been on a boomer.

Sounds like he will be enjoying seeing the world. With his scores I thought he would be in computer or technology. Is this just mapping or is it tech/computer?

Pooky My son is a Chief and has been a ET/Nav in fact he went in as a Quartermaster and has been in for18 years it is a very good career. A lot of it is working with the maps and knowing how to plot a course so the boat doesn't get in trouble. Charlie has been all over the world. Also the Artic when he first went on his first sub.
