MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

Thanks for the update Pam. That is terrible they will not be upgrading them from base. It makes no sense really, for the recruits from places like Hawaii and territories can't swim home! Can they make it any harder on these young people who stepped up to serve their country?
ADT you go and try to help your daughter. It does help.

Here are the new numbers for Transportation. Mr. Grogan is no longer there, and my husband did not get a name when he called, they were not very forthcoming... anyway, the number is the Great Lakes number 847-688-3359 and then ext 331 or 332. As of today they cannot upgrade at the Base from a bus to plane ticket. They will out process that morning, and as of that time the Navy is no longer responsible for them. If you want them to fly home, not take the bus, they must take a taxi to the airport ($30 to $50 fare) and the ticket must be waiting for them at the airport. The earliest flight they can take out of O'Hare is 10am. Hope this helps everyone trying to get their loved ones home. Still no word on when he is leaving. His birthday is Saturday and he would like to be home for that, I am not sure that is going to happen. He will be home next week for sure. Take care ladies

ADT Mee Mee's Mom Comment by ADT Mee Mee's Mom on January 7, 2009 at 1:26pm
I am sad and happy to let you guys know that Mee Mee is being medically separated for chronic shin pain and obesity. Their Chief spoke with the MD and told him "they have been here too long, send them home." I am quite distressed about this change and will be contacting legal myself. Thanks to those of you who have kept us in your prayers. When I speak with her again, I will let her know that she can fight this process and I will support what ever decision she makes. I will keep all of you posted on the upcoming events.

I can't help but wonder who doesn't have a bit of an anxiety disorder going into BC. It is all so strange and different from real life. If you are not anxious, I would be surprized. Hang in there Maggie. If Kelvin ends up coming home, there are great things in his and your future...don't get discouraged.
Rose R Comment by Rose R on January 6, 2009 at 10:55pm
Maggie, there is a protocol for fighting a discharge if your BF wants to do it, even after the decision tomorrow. They go to the Boot Camp Chief and present their case. Lots of running around to get paper work filled out, but just tell him he has options.
He can get a second opinion medically also. Did he give you the ship 17 address?

Janet Comment by Janet on January 6, 2009 at 3:04pm
That's great!! I'm so happy for you both! Lana you know we've been through this together and I'm so glad we found each other for support. Even though it's not the outcome either one of us wanted, at least it's over and we can close that chapter and start a better one. Cody will probably be moved over there on Friday. He called today and said he's pretty sure that's when it will be. Hopefully it won't take too long before he's processed out and can come home too. :-)

Pam ...Josh's mom Comment by Pam ...Josh's mom on January 6, 2009 at 1:14pm
Just heard from Josh. He should be home between Friday and Tuesday..Woopie!!! He said the friend whose parents told him not to come home had been invited by another friend to come and live with him in NV. Good to know he has a place to go. I am so ready for him to be home!!
Take care all and Happy New Year!
