MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

Dianne, don't waste time with the recruiter. They give a lot of misinformation and really don't help once separation is in the picture.Have your son sign the form for release of info so you can ask the questions, also the HIPPA release to find out about the medical info re his shoulder. They usually treat such injuries as pre existing, so the Navy does not cover for it.
The first call is awful, I know. Frustrating all the more since they are being rushed, that is just how it is. It is the military.

Arizona Mumzie did your son open a Navy bank account for his pay? I believe it was a month before money got deposited into the account. They have to turn in the uniforms and get credit into their account for that. I know some moms have charged the return trip on their credit cards till the money gets settled.
Some of the recruits were told the day before they left, how they were going.
They take a cab to the airport and if others are leaving at the same time they can split the fare. Was 45 last I heard.

Thanks for the responses. I had some suggestions to call his recruiter. I had left a message yesterday & he never returned my call. Not surprising. We've had that issues before. I did call up to Great Lakes and after being redirected twice, I was sent to legal which was exactly where I needed to be. He told me he would call my son down today & have him call me directly. My son called within the next couple of hours and got to talk privately with me for quite a while. He injured his shoulder and was told that he would lose his SEAL contract. They then had him take a personality test which he said he must've not done very well on because they then told him he was going home on medical discharge. The lady told him what the discharge was based on, but he said she talked fast & he didn't quite understand it. He said he would be able to call me back tomorrow and would read me exactly what they write on the paperwork. They moved him over to ship 5 last night. My son said he was upset that the commander would only allow him to talk to his dad for a second and he knew that we would be worried not knowing what was going on. I just want to thank everyone who posts on here. This site has been a wealth of information for me.

Apparently the papers have been signed off but he has yet to get a departure date. He believes he is being sent home by bus though Debbie H said her child was sent back to Phx by plane, as it is cheaper. Is it possible that they have not told him how he will come home? If he goes by plane will he have transportation to the airport? He first told us he was leaving yesterday, then he called again and said it might not be until sometime next week? Also, he has been there since June 26th and has not received a paycheck yet? Is this normal? I understand that he would not get paid July 1st, but should he not have been paid by July 15th? If they release him prior to the 1st and he still does not have any money in his account, who do we contact regarding his pay? Thanks for any info! :)

Dianne. sorry but i can't answer your question either. My son made his call. He was allowed to call from Legal also, and I spoke to the Chief there several times.
Perhaps the Sargent was just being nice and helping your son loaning his phone as Diane Shelia's mom suggested. If he is being discharged on a medical issue there is no need to worry why the Sargent was involved.
That first call is very short, especially if he had to borrow a phone.
It is hard to get details, as they get 2 calls a week, very brief, if they are lucky. That depends on how the group in Separations behaves, so if anyone acts up or does anything to annoy the RDC, no call for the whole group.
I found we had more time to talk when my son went to legal, and he was allowed to discuss it in a private room.

Dianne...my son was sent home last year & the first call I received was from him in the RDC's office...the RDC had him call us for about 30 seconds to let us know he was being sent to Ship 17 & being separated...I don't know of any other calls like the one you & I recieved...

Can anyone answer this question for me? A Sargeant called my ex-husband and said that my son needed to speak to him and my son got on the phone & said he was being sent home on a medical discharge. When his dad asked about it, my son said he had to go. Is it normal for a Sargeant to call and put the recruit on the phone? I found that very strange. It was upsetting that we could not find out any details. He has been at boot camp for 4 weeks.

Arizona...my son just came home from GL last week to PHX and they flew him on AA. He had one stop in Dallas/Ft. Worth. The travel guy said that Phx is one of only about 6 cities that it's cheaper to fly to than take the bus.
