MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

Debbie...my son was on Ship 17 last summer & I was able to send him books & puzzle books while he was there...not sure if things have changed since last year...

I just talked to my son and he said that he can't have books sent to him or anything like that. I've read many posts where moms have sent materials to their kids on ship 5. Anyone?

Oh Diane! Thank you! I'll check that out! I would feel so much better if I knew someone who cared was watching out for him...I'm having such anxiety about his travel home.

Grateful mom....i am so with u...if my daughter took the bus ...it would have been a 2 day ride..thank goodness there is lots of Navymoms along the way at stops to check on them....but sheila did go plane...i was still to scared for her that long on a bus when any joe can get on without id...

Sheila was on in BC for a total of 4 weeks and had money to come home with about $800

Debbie...he will return some of the clothing he was issued and returned part of the amount...like their dress clothes...there is a bus station right outside the base....they wait there for their ride downtown or taxi to the airport...

There is lots of moms in GL willing to help with what is needed...rides to airport...and sit with them while they wait...go to my page and click on the Sailor Rescue group....alot of awesome moms in there....

Good luck to u both.....huuuuuuuggggggggggggggssssssssss for u both

Debbie,
yes--I am also very concerned about my daughter traveling home on a Greyhound Bus with no phone... I'm hoping she gets the day trip and not the overnight schedule :*( Same with her, about the limited money. She went to BC on June 15th.

her biggest concerns are getting a job, another car, and a place to live. Gee, not much to have to face in this economy. I don't know how these young people will fare with all this disappointment and loss. Hopefully, they will bend and not break.

digging for info...fun and a challenge-because who wants to have an ordinary day? lol. I'm thinking there won't be much pay left. He already has his Navy issue stuff from Pdays and will only have been there a total of about 3-4 weeks. It'll all work out...I'm just worried for him traveling alone without a phone, etc. I know you know what I mean. I'm hoping his brother can sit at the train station with him while he waits for the cab to the airport. He's in phase 2 and in ATT school at GL. It would be good for both of them. Thanks for listening.

Debbie...yes...just ask him those questions when he calls...he can call from transportation and get your card info then...he will also have his pay when he gets out...u can ask him if he has cash for the trip home.....diggning for info...lol...now isnt that always fun...
Debbie H. (Casey & Kelly) Comment by Debbie H. (Casey & Kelly) on July 5, 2009 at 8:40pm
OK..I'm thinking I'll send him some cash to have for travel, food, etc. I do need to find out how to put money in his account. Is it possible for me to give the travel arranger my debit card number to use? I suppose I can ask him those questions tomorrow. I'll be on the phone digging for info.
Diane (Sheila's mom,WA) Comment by Diane (Sheila's mom,WA) on July 5, 2009 at 5:58pm
Debbie....taxi ride to airport is about $46 but could share that if someone else is leaving same day as he is....also Transportation sets up his flight ticket....they take it out of his Navy account but u can always put money in that account...good luck and keep us posted....huuuggggssss
Debbie H. (Casey & Kelly) Comment by Debbie H. (Casey & Kelly) on July 5, 2009 at 10:08am
Oh Grateful Mom, I know what you mean. But for Kelly a bus trip home would probably be a 2 day trip and he's had enough. I was thinking that I would buy the ticket on my card and he could pay for the taxi. I would have to put money in his account too, but at least he'd get here and I would get some of it back from the bus ticket. If I could fly out there and get him myself I would, but that's just not feasible or practical. Thanks for the info...it'll help me plan a little better. I'm guessing that we can coordinate a lot of that through the travel office RTC uses also. I have that phone number as well. When do you expect your daughter to be leaving GL? By the way, we have relatives in O'Neill and Norfolk.
