georganna, I got ya beat... my sailor is 6'0" and 137! He eats everything well, but just has one of those metabolisms. The Navy has requirements for minimum body fat and he always just scrapes by it. As long as your sailor isn't anemic and stays within regs, don't worry. Depending on the cooks, deployment can add some pounds because they're getting very regular meals and aren't running around -- still busy, just not 'working out' as much. Hugs! k.

Our condolences go out to those families who lost a loved one at this terrible tradgedy yesterday at Fort Hood.

Georganna, my son is on the "slender" side also. He is almost 5'9" and weighed about 130 before he started working out. (He takes after his father who was 6' and 145# when we married at 21!) He started working out and that put some pounds on him. He was taking the powder drinks that are supposed to make you gain muscle before he signed up and he got up to about 140 before he left. Since going to Hawaii, he got up to 162# because he did not have time to workout and he spent his free time either at the beach or a bar drinking beer. He actually had rolls around his waist and abdomen. Now he is working out again and looks real good, not just skin and bones. Thank God that he got tired of blowing his money on beer all the time! I don't think he would say the good food helped, especially not in BC. He said he got tired of Oatmeal everyday for breakfast.

Your son will definitely learn to eat whatever he is given when he gets it because they are kept very busy and not always a lot of time to eat it.

My son is 5'10 and weighs only 135. He is a vegetarian and has been for over 5 years. I'm hoping with all the healthy choices, veggies and fruit, bread etc - he might get buff and put on some weight. I'm thinking maybe 15 lbs. Do any of you have slender or vegetarian son's? I'm part time vegetarian. I am enjoying veggie burgers and don't buy or eat much real meat. I started a typed letter informing Johnnie of life back here and so far its 8 pages. I also copied pictures to put in the Flat Rate Envelope. I'm going to enclose post card stamps and first class too. I told him I don't expect him to write and maybe could even share the stamps with others. Time will only tell. I feel connected to him just writing. I wish I could have a picture of Johnnie of the sub sites and Joe on the Hawaii, his ship etc sites. Is there a way to do that. Probably not........maybe I should just change it to a picture of me. When you check my profile you will see my sons and the rest of the family.

Hi Holly, my son is not on the Houston, but he is in Guam on the USS Buffalo. Its hard to have them so far from home isn't it?

When AJ was in BC, I sent him paper clippings from home and he was told he wasn't suppose to have them but since it was hometown news he could keep it.

My son, Jon, is on the US Houston sub, Guam. This is my first time posting on Navymom.com ....Are there any other moms out there who have sons on the same sub?

Rhonda. Interesting - Kelly was also in a 900 division and he was 29. In his division, though, most were younger and were always getting everyone in trouble. They had LOTS of extra IT.

Georganna - I also remembered that I sent stamps and phone cards; the Navy provides the stationery.

Marty - Yes Kerry was very lucky. Of the 3 RDC's he had, 2 were a little easy going and 1 was a black and white by the book guy. But the one who liked sports and jokes was the one everybody liked.

Kerry was in a performance division; I don't know if that made a difference or not. He also was in an "older" group. The median age was 27 or 28. There were several guys in their early 30's in the division who kept most of the younger ones in line so the division did not have to suffer too much. Kerry was 22 and only had 8 or 10 guys younger than him.
