Navy For Moms

Hi,
My son is in A school in South Carolina. His MOS is Machinist Mate. I live in Southwest Austin and would love to find another Navy mom in the area to chat with.

I'm still figuring all of this out. What does PIR refer to?

Danne- PIR is Pass In Review also known as Graduation from Boot Camp.

Thanks. I really should know this, as I attended my son's graduation in May! Do you know your daughter's MOS?

Hi Danne,

I live in this great city...Austin! My son is in the NROTC at TAMU. I'm also trying to find some moms in the area. Have you had any luck finding any more in ATX? Well take care and look forward to chatting!

I haven't made friends with any other Navy moms here in Austin. How are things going for you son? My son is in Power School now in Goose Creek. I think he's doing really well. There was certainly an adjustment period but he seems really happy now.

Hi Danne! Oops! Sorry for not replying sooner! My son is doing great in NROTC. This is his first year in college, so he has had a lot to deal with and trying to learn everything Navy/military has been a huge undertaking, but I think he is doing pretty well over all. He is struggling a bit with trying to determine what he wants to do in the Navy, but is in very capable hands. Hope you are doing well! Take care!

His first summer cruise will really help to open his eyes to the possibilities and help him with the decisions.

I'm glad to see this, my son has been a little down lately too. I think he is feeling the full weight of his commitment. He's coming up on a year since he enlisted and he won't finish training for another 8 months or so.

Hello Danne,
I'm just east of Austin in Elgin. My son has been in the Navy for 2 and a half years and went to A school in South Carolina as an ET. He now serves aboard the USS Harry S. Truman. I would love to chat with you and if you have any questions about Goose Creek I might be able to answer them for you.

Hi,

Thanks for writing. My son just started Power school. He won't be in the fleet for about another year. I'm a little anxious about how it will be when he finishes school. I think he'll wind up on a carrier. I'm hoping he isn't stationed in Japan. I can't imagine having him so far away. For now all is well. He is getting along great and seems to be happy and thriving.

He'll be on a carrier unless he volunteers for submarine duty. He'll be given a paper to list his choices for places to be stationed. My son listed 5 places and got his 4th choice, Virginia. Japan was his thrid choice. We looked at it as chance for him to see some of the world and maybe we could make a trip to visit him. Either way if he gets Japan or a carrier which may go on deployment and may stop in foreign countries he will need to get himself a passport if he leaves the ship or base for other than military reasons.
My son did well in Power school and we were able to attend his graduation at the end of Power school. He took Prototype training in upstate New York which he enjoyed as he was able to visit some of my sisters and other relatives I have up there and he learned to drive in snow. He found an excellent mechanic up there who was willing to work with my son and teach him how to repair his own truck which was good for him and gave him something to do in his off time which isn't much during prototype, but the kids need some sort of outlet for their stress during that time.
My son is now part of his ship's soccer team. He says he needs something to do aboard ship as he can't work on his truck or drive when out to sea. lol
