Navy For Moms

Amalia Margaret " Molly" Steman was one of the 14 children in her home in Kimball, Minnesota. After completing nurses training, Molly joined the Navy Nurses Corps in 1943. She served in military hospitals in Great Lakes, Illinois and Parris Island, South Carolina, before being assigned to the Navy Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

While on duty there, Molly cared for Carl Vinson's wife Mary, and the two women became good friends. Mrs Vinson eventually introduced Molly to Tillman Snead, who was Carl Vinson's administrative assistant. After a 15-month courtship, the two were married. Carl Vinson was best man at the wedding.

After the war, Molly resigned her commission and nursed Mary Vinson until her death in 1950. Left alone in his Chevy Chase home, Carl Vinson invited Molly and Tillman to make their home with him. They accepted.

While Tillman accompanied Vinson to Capital Hill, Molly took care of the home and raised the Snead's two sons, Tillman III and Carl.

When Vinson retired in 1964, he returned to his home town of Milledgeville, Georgia. Before long, he convinced the Sneads to move there too. After Vinson suffered a stroke, Molly converted a room in the Snead home for Vinson's convalescence.

Under her guidance and encouragement, Vinson eventually regained much of his self sufficiency. This was particularly evident during the launching of the aircraft carrier that bears his name. During the launch , at age 96, Vinson's wit and mobility were a fitting tribute to Molly Snead's devoted care.
