Echoing Centhea's invitation, we are in Virginia Beach, and if anyone's MID is in the area, can't get home, and doesn't have plans for Thanksgiving, we have room at our table, too! Send me a PM.

At Virginia Tech, the cadets wear a uniform every school day. One of those days they wear their military uniform if they are in ROTC. If the football team wins the game, they are allowed to wear khaki pants and a Corps of Cadets golf shirt on Mond...

Katherine, there should be a housing office at the base. He can go there and they will have information on places to rent. Lots of times, military folks want to keep their homes when they transfer (expecting to return in a couple of years) so they...

Centhea, we bought a basic first aid kit when my son started school, and have replaced bandaids, etc. as needed. He also took moleskin for blisters (or to prevent them?) and some of that icy hot stuff you use for sore muscles.

Hi there Hokie moms.....my daughter graduated and was commissioned from VT May 08..currently on the USS Greenbay. It was so hard to say goodbye to that part of her life...she was a Highty Tighty, sang in the Southern Colonels and was Naval Battalion Commander for the ROTC unit in her senior year. What a wonderful NROTC under the wonderful leadership of Capt. Rubenstein. Football season is upon us, anyone going to Hokie ganes?!!!

Well, it is so nice to talk to you. I know there are many of us hokiemoms out there who have sons or daughters in the Navy. Graduation and commissioning was so hard in many ways. Saying goodbye to your little boy and the school you've come to love so much over the course of 5 years (Sean had a five year program) was really difficult for me. The boys he spent his time with were so unbelievable and I know they are banded together as a result of their ROTC experience and of course, the whole disaster there a few years ago. I get all misty just thinking about it. I am so glad that he is just so darned happy when he writes.

Thanks for your advice on VA beach traffic and other ideas ! My son is living in VA beach. He graduated from VMI in 07. I was looking at the north side to be away from the boardwalk but didn't know about traffic and closer to Chesapeake Bay beaches (more private ?), is this not a good idea. We are not a military family, altho my father-in-law did a short stint in the navy so any advice is great ! We have had a hard time letting go but the Navy seems to be his second family (he would never say that !). Thanks again

Profile Information

About me:
I have been a Navy daughter (first 21 years), Navy wife (past 25 years), and now consider myself a Navy mom (son is in ROTC at Virginia Tech). The first two were relatively painless, but I already know that it will be harder for me to send my son off on deployment than it was to see my father off or to wave goodbye to my husband! I joined to be a part of a support group and to offer whatever support I can to those who may be new at this Navy thing.
I am here to support or represent my:
Son/Daughter
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
In the NROTC program
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
His commanders have more of a say in his life than I will, but he still sometimes needs his mom and dad for support. I have to remember that he needs to make his own path, and not necessarily follow his father's or his grandfather's path.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.
