I don't know why conventionals don't like nukes! My daughter was sent to the nuclear department when she first got onto the Abe Lincoln, she did not know anything about taking care of nukes. My question is, why was she sent to that department in t...

Thanks JJ, What you say about the media is sooooo correct. There were happenings on the news, over the years, and Kristen would tell us later, that what they were saying wasn't the way it happened. Alot of good is done by our military people while...

Martyzmom, my daughter was stationed in Japan for 3 years. She didn't really like it that much, but she didn't know the language and didn't really give it a try. You would have had a chance to visit that country! ( I have another daughter that is ...

I had my years of "sorry, mom i can't say much." I did live in anxiety, not knowing where she was. The worst was an email from her last year, and all it said was, "Mom, two of my buddies are missing and three of us are stuck in this hotel." Here I...

As the old saying goes, let them spread their wings!!!! Maybe I am living the Navy more then other Moms. I have a daughter instead of a son in the Navy, (which could be a reason and that she has been in the service for four years) but I know what ...

Hi Kimi, Finally getting back to reading this and i just got off of the phone with my daughter Kristen. I put across her, some of your concerns about being a MM. Kristen is a conventional(auxilliary) machinists mate. She works alot with more of th...

Faith, I asked my daughter if she would be a good one for you to talk to. She asked if you were interested in being a conventional or a nuke? Conventionals supposedly don't like Nukes! Kristen is conventional and works on just about anything and e...

My daughter has been a Machinist Mate since graduating from Great Lakes, Feb. 2005. I guess I won't be much of any help, as I don't know what you mean by "rate"? She has had to study and take some tests to advance to become an MM3 from a MMFN. She...

I am for the MOA get together. Combining more then one reason for a cities trip would be great! Christmas shopping could definitely be thrown in!!!! This way maybe some from the outer regions of Minnesota could make it, too?

Another mom that is a bit like me! I do not know how to do any texting, my kids have given up on me, they have tried to teach me. I can live with not knowing that in my life! I also agree with having to know more in advance of when the meet and gr...

I could have used this site in 2004, when Kristen left. Now reading all of the concerns and worries that new Moms have, I am trying to remember back. Did I have these same worries? I was happy that she seemed happy about the whole idea of going of...

I like your son's shirt! If my Kristen doesn't wear it, i would!!! She has never called herself a SNIPE before. When i asked her, she knew about it. She just says that she is in the bottom of the ship, in the bowels, and if ship would blow, she wo...

This note is for Nicole, who isn't a mom but a recruit! My daughter's first assignment was to Sasebo, Japan, on the ship USS Essex. She flew from Chicago to Singapore and was met at the airport from a representative from the ship. The ship would g...

My daughter has been in the Navy since September 2004, she has been on two totally different ships, she has seen and done so many things(even ones that I don't want to hear about!), been around the world, deployed for 7+ months in the middle east,...

This is to Becky, My daughter hasn't ever been stationed on the San Diego base but she has many friends there. They tell her that the whole base is a bit weird, in the sense that weird/odd things happen there. I told her about what you wrote about...

Profile Information

About me:
I am a parent of a daughter serving on the USS Abraham Lincoln. I am very proud of her! (and miss her very much!)
She is the middle child of a family of five siblings. I think that Kristen got interested in the Navy after watching the show, "Down Periscope" too many times!!!! I didn't have an emotional breakdown when she went off to bootcamp. I knew that this is what she wanted to do! All of my children are many miles away from home, doing what they have chosen to do in life. That is part of the plan of one's life! All five know that Dad and Mom are backing them with their chosen careers and we will help when needed!
I am here to support or represent my:
Child/Stepchild
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
As a women, you have to fight harder to advance through the ranks. In the military, there is still a bias against women. My daughter has encountered many situations concerning this issue in the 6 years that she has been in the Navy. I worry about her because she is one of only a few women in her department. She is doing a typical man's job and is doing it very well! You have to keep fighting for what you want!
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.
