Joel called home several times by phone as he was told it was 4-5 cents a minute. I sure hope that this is true as we talked pretty long. He too is loving it in Japan and has gone around the area with David. They both like exploring. Joel is still in processing and he is not sure how long that takes but does not seem to mind. He says that it is not to cold there and that the Navy issues parkas that are great for the really cold weather. The sailors give the parkas back when their tour is up. Joel says that the coat should keep them really warm, but hasn't had to use it much yet.
Joel and David and a few others went to an authentic sushi bar and had a great time. I am surprised as Joel was not one to eat much sea food, but he wants to try things there and had fun tasting. He says that David was up for trying all kinds of food choices as well.
I will let you know if I hear anything new.

I have been hearing from Joel about life in Misawa and how he and David are having fun going out and exploring the area some. It is so great that they enjoy doing things together, nice to have a friend.
Hope you are doing well in Florida. We used to live in Florida around 12 years ago in the Tampa Bay area so am familiar with Florida.

Hi there. Saw that you were located in Clearwater and wanted to let you know of a Tampa Bay Area get together on the 19th of April. Check the Events page. We have a Tampa Bay Area group and are trying to schedule get togethers to share stories and advice. We attempted in March to meet at Anderson Park, but it was probably the coldest day of the year. Only 4 of us showed up but it was a good start. Hope you'll join our group and we might see you at the April event.
Good luck to your Sailor!

Have heard from Joel by email that he is in Misawa and is getting settled in. It is so great that he knows David and a couple of other sailors from Pensacola. Joel is liking it there already and has sent a few emails to keep us informed.
We have a little more time with Joel before he leaves so am cooking all his favorite foods etc. I am not looking forward to the good byes but I know that he will do fine in Misawa.
I like keeping in touch. Thanks again.

Sounds like our sons know each other as I showed Joel your son's pic and he said that they had shared phone numbers before leaving Cory Station. Joel kind of had the same problem with the orders being messed up for him as well. He has had to adjust some as he was promised air crew. He is really happy about going to Misawa though and was ready to move on to the next thing. He will be leaving the first part of March.
Some of the information that I have about Misawa is from my brother. He was a missionary in Misawa, several years ago. He and his wife were apart of a great organization called Over Seas Christian Service Men. The missionaries have a home there with meals and a place to sleep for the service men and women. They plan tours of the area as well as Bible studies, etc. I remember my brother talking about a huge number of service people eating at the house for all the holidays. I am hoping that Joel will look the place up when he gets some time.
