It was great to hear from you. Dont feel bad about not responding. We all have other responsibilities that are priorities. I have friends in the military that we go for months without hearing from eachother. BUT we are all old enough and mature enough to understand that we dont always have time to be getting on the internet or calling friends. Family is a big responsibility in everyone's life and they should be priority. So dont ever feel bad about such a thing. If the person refuses to understand, then that is their problem. :-)
Anyhow, how are things with your kid. Any good news?
My daughter is still looking for a job but has yet to discuss following in my footsteps like she had wanted to do years ago. Hopefully, for now....she will love me enough not to join and make me suffer a heartattack. LOL.

How are you doing???? Hope all is well.
Angie
To answer your question, that is actually a picture of myself on my profile. Although, you can say you are looking at my daughter as well. People confuse us all the time for being sisters. LOL
That is also a graduation photo from boot camp. I enlisted as a Fireman and by the time I finished my 4-year enlistment, I was a 3rd Class Petty Officer in the Engineering field. A machinist mate, to be exact. I did pass my 2nd Class exam but as a result of the fact that I got out 2 weeks before I was due to be frocked, I never got to wear it.
As for your daughter, that always worries me....when they are listening to friends opinion because I learned through life that what is meant for you will be, and that what may be right for you, may not be for the other person. I strongly believe in the idea that no matter how much time you have wasted, you will never know what is right for you unless you try it. When we are young, it takes us a long time to grasp that concept.
If you read my profile you will also note that I said that my daughter had once spoken about joining the military. Although she changed her mind, it must have still been an option back in 2003 because after the results of the war, the conversations in school, the news and everything else that came out on the table, most of these kids were scared to death to even join. Maybe that is what is really happening with this boy your daughter is friends with. He may just be too embarass to admit his fear to her. Just keep encouraging her.
As for you...was it hard to be training among that many men? Did you ever realize that it was fear that made you stronger. Some people dont believe that or realize that until they are much older. To be honest, it has nothing to do with un-chauvinistic men, it has to do with how you carry yourself and how you demand respect. That was all YOU, not them. So congratulate yourself again! LOL
Anyhow, I am going to get going now but you have a blessed day. To you as well, thank you and your family for being a part of our countries best.

Happy New Year! I saw your profile and I couldn't help but want to write to you.
When I joined the military back in 1988, I had wanted to get into intel communications but the schooling was not available. So when I reported on board my first command I was thrown in the pit. I was a very shy girl when I joined the military. Even out of boot camp, I still had a lot of growing up to do. Seeing myself in an engine room where the only people surrounding me where 2 dozen men and 3 women, made me grow up faster than you could even imagine. By the time I decided not to re-enlist in 1992, I had passed the Petty Officer 2nd Class - Machinist Mate exam. The only reason why I never got to wear it was because I got out two weeks before I was supposed to. My point is that no matter what anyone thinks, if we put our minds to it, a woman in the engineering field can do a much better job than a man. That is why I have such great admiration of women that join the military and learn to work on ship engines. It's a lot of work but it also helped me to learn how to get my brothers (shipmates) respect. I never said I couldn't lift anything. Just the fact that I tried, made them respect me more and it never failed that if I showed that I tried, there would always be someone there to help me.
So...I hope your daughter ends up as successful as your family, yourself and I. God bless.
Angie
Thank you for explaining the responsiblilities of a corpsman and it does sound likethis experience will be helpful. My daughter's major in economics and she plans to start work on her masters degree within a few years. As in all things though while in the Navy they decide where they can best use your skills. She is a SWO (surface Warfare Officer) stationed in Norfolk, Va and handles a small crew of sailors currently. Seems to enjoy her responsiblities now.
Good chattng with you, hope we get to do it again. I would like to hear how the training went too.

I'm glad that you're in touch with your local blue and gold officer. Have you contacted or attended any meetings with the local academy parent group? That might be a good source for you and your daughter. I take it she's in 10th grade now and is taking a lot of science courses.
Well, you know the drill, gpa is important so are the classes she's taking. Strong math & sciences classes are a must. AP, IB and honors courses will set her apart from other applicants at whatever college she choses to attend. As far as wanting doctors, there is a good amount of truth to that but I look at it this way: it is not that they don't want them it's more like only a few slots are available for even the very highest achieving and brightest at the academy. And everyone at the academy is basically the top from their area.
IMO service academies by their very nature are set up to do a couple of basic thing; train young leaders to lead our military troops and give cadets, mids etcs the academic and technological skills to problem solve like the skillset found in most engineers. However, academy grads I know are capable and do end up in many different professional fields. They grow into CEO's, lawyers, doctors and even Presidents of the US of A.
I know not a thing about the corpsman training please tell me more about it.
