Hi Diana - you should be excited! If I'm not mistaken, the Navy base is on the island of Crete on Souda Bay. This link answers a lot of your questions: http://www.cnic.navy.mil/soudabay/index.htm We've vacationed in Greece, though not Crete, so ...

Hello All! Greece sounds like a wonderful duty station. Is anyone familiar with the area? Do they speak English off base? Barracks or apartments available? Can you bring a car? How is the food and water and TV? Is it expensive? Anything to beware ...

Hey Ladies! The local high schools have night classes that are very inexpensive. I go on Tuesday nights to line dance from 6:30 to 7:30. There are about 50 women and 4 men and you don't have to have a partner. It is fun and good exercise. My frie...

This was a maturing experience, The Navy has a lot to offer, This was the best decision he/she could have made

Where've you been stranger?? Curtis is in Corpsman school now and scheduled to grad on 18 Dec. I am excited about having him home for Christmas during his 2 week leave. We have not heard yet where he will be stationed after school. What is Billy doing in San Diego? I sure hope you get to have him home for Christmas too. I am doing good and hear from Curtis at least once every week. Good to hear from you!!

Hi Karla,
I am so glad you were able to have a fun visit in Jacksonville! Have a safe trip home and let me know when you have your new photos uploaded. As you can tell by my picture I haven't taken the time to figure that out -HA!

Thanks Diana, sorry it took me so long to reply. We are in Jacksonville now and the only internet we have is thru my blackberry from work which I have to plug to my laptop and us it as a modem. The Sprint service I have is not that great on base either. We have been having a blast since we've been here! We have to check out at 11 this morning, but we will probably stay in town most of the day- we haven't gone to the beach yet so we will probably do that. I will have to upload some picts when we get home. We got our first picts with our sailor and our 2 sea cadets. That was exciting! 3 boys in uniform! Talk to ya soon!

Hey Pam,
I am so glad you have decided to write to your son everyday. I even sent a picture of my son's dog to remind him of good things, which he loved! Trust me, it will mean the world to your son to write to him during this time. After boot camp don't worry about writing because they have access to the phones. I don't believe we received more than 3 or 4 calls during boot camp time. They are learning so much in just a short time and really don't have much time to do much other than collapse in bed. I think I received only 3 or 4 letters during that time for the same reason. Billy did not come home after boot camp graduation, he went right across the street to school and lived in a dormitory environment, which he enjoyed. We flew up for his graduation and stayed at the Navy Lodge (clean and close to the base) which was on a Friday. There is no swimming pool which was okay for February!! Then we had him from noon til about 8:00PM or 10:00PM. We had enough time for a good meal and then honestly he wanted to go back to the hotel - take a shower, call his friends, and sleep a bit before reporting back to base (the day before graduation he had been in a battle station event and had been awake for 23 hours - not sure if the timing is always right before graduation but my son was happy & exhausted. Then he was able to visit with us all day Saturday. He wanted to go to Best Buys, of course! I think the town with the restaurants and stores is called Gurnee. Remember to have him ask for military discounts for all his electronic purchases. If he gets a phone or lap top, insurance is a must and see if they can engrave his name or last 4 digits of his social security # on the lap top. I felt good about leaving after graduation because I could see how much he had accomplished and how proud he was. He really is suited for the high standards of military life. I knew at that point that he had achieved a higher level of understanding and maturity. He was able to come home for vacation after training school before reporting to his new duty station. At first, he wished he could stay home but toward the end he was looking forward to his next Navy adventure. In some ways it is sad for you, as a mom, but knowing he has a future and is surrounded by people that have similar goals and motivation helps. Especially turning his care over to God is also very peaceful. Billy calls to check in with us once a week. It's always great to hear his voice. I am sure Curtis is motivated and doing well. the Navy does a great job in taking care of their folks. Have a great day and a blessed week!

Diana, you are just what I needed at this time. Your words have been encouraging to me and have given me some hope. Thank you for the advice on what to bring for him at PIR. I am sure he would enjoy having those things then. I was really beating myself up for not writing him like I should. I have made myself a promise to write him at least once a day. I just found out that one of the boys in his division was sent to the hospital with a staph infection. It makes me wonder how Curtis is doing. I really thought that I would get a letter this weekend, but I did not. Do you remember when Billy was allowed to call you at bc? I was wondering after he was able to come home after training, was it hard for him to leave again for his assignment? I am sure it was hard to see him go again. Well...I need some sleep. Hope you have a great week! Thanks again for everything.

Hi Diana, thank you for kind comments! Where is Billy stationed and what does he do? I am sure he is glad that BC and A school is over! It is so nice to hear that he is enjoying the military. I only hope that Curtis finds it to be a fulfilling career (if he goes that far!). Right now he should be starting week 3. Can't wait to get the BC thing over with because it is just killing me not being able to talk to him. Thank you for the prayers and I will send some up for your Billy as well. Take care! Enjoy the weekend...not as much rain they say!
