About me:
I married a navy guy 37 years ago. Have 3 children. the youngest is in the Navy on the Theodore Roosevelt
I am here to support or represent my:
Child/Stepchild
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Thinking about joining
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was concerned or afraid
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
Patience. You always can't talk to your child when they enter the service. and that can become very frustrating.

Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

THE SNIPES LAMENT

NOW EACH OF US FROM TIME TO TIME, HAS GAZED UPON THE SEA,
AND WATCHED THE WARSHIPS PULLING OUT, TO KEEP THEIR COUNTRY FREE.
AND MOST OF US HAVE READ A BOOK; OR HEARD A LUSTY TALE,
ABOUT THE MEN WHO SAIL THESE SHIPS; THROUGH LIGHTING, WIND AND HAIL.

BUT THERE'S A PLACE WITHIN EACH SHIP, THAT LEGEND FAILS TO TELL
IT'S DOWN BELOW THE WATERLINE, IT TAKES A LIVING TOLL
A HEATED METAL LIVING HELL THAT SAILORS CALL "THE HOLE".

IT HOUSES ENGINES RUN BY STEAM, THAT MAKES THE SHAFTS GO ROUND.
A PLACE OF FIRE AND NOISE AND HEAT, THAT BEATS YOUR SPIRITS DOWN.
WHERE BOILERS ARE THE HELLISH HEART, WITH BLOOD OF ANGRY STEAM;
THESE MOLDED GODS WITHOUT REMORSE, LIKE NIGHTMARES IN A DREAM.

THE ROARING FIRES POSE A THREAT LIKE LIVING LIFE IN DOUBT,
FOR AT ANY MINUTE WITHOUT SCORN, COULD ESCAPE AND CRUSH YOU OUT.
WHERE TURBINES SCREAM LIKE TORTURED SOULS, ALONE AND LOST IN HELL,
WITH ORDERS FROM SOMEWHERE ABOVE, THEY ANSWER EVERY BELL.

THE MEN WHO KEEP THE FIRES LIT, AND MAKE THE ENGINES RUN,
ARE STRANGERS TO THE WORLD OF LIGHT, AND RARELY SEE THE SUN.
THEY HAVE NO TIME FOR MAN OR GOD, NO TOLERANCE FOR FEAR,
THEIR ASPECT PAYS NO LIVING THING THE TRIBUTE OF A TEAR.

THERE'S LITTLE THAT MEN CAN DO, THAT THESE MEN HAVE NOT DONE,
BENEATH THE DECKS, DEEP IN THE HOLE, TO MAKE THE ENGINES RUN.
AND EVERY HOUR OF EVERY DAY, THEY KEEP THEIR WATCH IN HELL,
FOR IF THE FIRES EVER FAIL, THEIR SHIPS A USELESS SHELL.

WHEN SHIPS CONVERGE TO HAVE A WAR UPON AN ANGRY SEA,
THE MEN BELOW JUST GRIMLY SMILE AT WHAT THEIR FATE MIGHT BE.
THEY'RE LOCKED BELOW, LIKE MEN 'FORE DOOMED, WHO HEAR NO BATTLE CRY,
IT'S WELL ASSUMED THAT IF THEY'RE HIT THE MEN BELOW WILL DIE.

FOR EVERY DAY'S A WAR DOWN THERE, WHEN GAUGES ALL READ RED.
TWELVE HUNDRED POUNDS OF HEATED STEAM, CAN KILL YOU MIGHTY DEAD.
SO IF YOU EVER WRITE THEIR SONS, OR TRY TO TELL THEIR TALE,
THE VERY WORDS SHOULD MAKE YOU HEAR A FIRED FURNACE WAIL.

THESE "MEN OF STEEL" THE PUBLIC NEVER GETS TO KNOW.
SO LITTLE'S HEARD ABOUT THE PLACE, THAT SAILORS CALL "THE HOLE".
BUT I CAN SING ABOUT THIS PLACE, AND TRY TO MAKE YOU SEE,
THE HARDENED LIFE OF MEN DOWN THERE, 'CAUSE ONE OF THEM IS ME.

I'VE SEEN THESE SWEAT SOAKED HEROS FIGHT, IN SUPERHEATED AIR.
TO KEEP THEIR SHIP ALIVE AND RIGHT, THOUGH NO ONE KNOWS THEY'RE THERE.
AND THUS THEY'LL FIGHT FOR AGES ON, 'TIL STEAMSHIPS SAIL NO MORE,
AMID THE BOILER'S MIGHTY HEAT AND TURBINE'S HELLISH ROAR.

SO WHEN YOU SEE A SHIP PULL OUT TO MEET A WARSHIP FOE.
REMEMBER FAINTLY, IF YOU CAN, "THE MEN WHO SAIL BELOW".

Oh Elizabeth......I will not be able to get to the meet n greet this Saturday. My daughter-in-law is still having problems (gall bladder removed last Friday) and my Grammy has been moved into hospice. I feel as though I can't even enjoy my boy being back home! But, it's not like he is here all the time anyway so I'm just rolling with the punches. I can't believe that 1 week ago I was preparing my drive to VA.! Our ride back home was fun with a 3 car caravan. Josh bounced from car to car at every pee stop. My parents went along and had such a good time, as did our neighbors with their 4 kids. Unfortunately Josh needs to be back on base by the 1st so I'm trying to get all the time I can with him without really asking for it. The pier seems like a dream to me now. The only thing I thought of and focused on was that ship coming in. My guys were down below on the side of the ship (by the captains dingy) as it was coming in. They had to leave that area as they approached the pier and never got to see anything else until they were on the gangway coming out of the hanger. Did you find Jason right away? I was crying as I watched other sailors finding their families but by the time Josh got off I think I was drained dry! Are you going to go to The Cheesecake Factory this Saturday? Jason took the 2nd leave right? What will he be doing after that? I am so glad I found you at the reception Elizabeth. And thank you for introducing me to Nannie! When it calms down here I'll email you to let you know of what Josh will be doing next. Hugs to you!!!!!! (soft one's)

I had a fantastic time! He'll be home in California soon - by end of June or so. My trip back was LONG. I was tired and got between 2 talkers on the plane from Dallas! I was hoping to sleep. We were delayed by an hour but finally got home yesterday around 5:00 pm PST. Very long day that began at 3:15 am EST. Today I am achy, have a headache and just don't feel normal...lol. All in all, what an experience! I know one I won't forget. My navy mom days may be coming to an end, but as Patrick told me, its only the beginning for him and I have so much more to look forward to. Graduation from college - perhaps marriage and grand-kids...my where does the time go?

Hi Elizabeth! Countdown time! I'm so excited. This will probably be my last TC. I told Nneka I'd wait for her in Norfolk, but she said no, so I thought this will be the last ladder climbing exercise for me.lol How are you doing?

Thanks Elizabeth! I thought I saw something about the 25th but it wasn't out there specifically saying that. That's why I commented. Today was Joanne's son's PIR. I can still remember Josh's like it was yesterday! I've been busy lately that I haven't been counting down the days and what a surprise to realize what we are down too! I will be looking for you at the reception! (how hard can I hug you?!!!!!!)

Okay, I "chewed" on it all day and bounced it off of a couple of people. I am going to go anyway. It is a chance to spend some time with my mom and my only child (even if he doesn't want me there). I have paid my dues and have had to jump through the divorce hoops for the past 19 yrs....not playing that game anymore. If Chad throws a fit, so be it...the supply line will be cut. Grow up and deal with it. If his dad has an issue with it, his dad knows how to contact me....I will see you there!!!!!!!!!!!!
