Hi, my daughter completed her first week of CORTRAMID West. She had aviation and loved it! She flew a MH-60 (helicopter?) and a T-34 (plane?). She was so excited each day after the experience of flying! There seems to be ample time to see San Dieg...

Profile Information

About me:
Hi my daughter is an NROTC scholar at Fordham University she is in her freshman year. Recently she was taken ill and admitted to the hospital (we live in California, she is in New York) needless to say, we were quite nervous. The NROTC students were so wonderful. One of the midshipmen kept in constant phone touch with me, they made sure she had liquids and food, made sure the Dean new of her situation, and were a constant source of strength for her. We are so please with the sense of comradery with this program, especially with being so far from her school.
Well, thats not really any info about me but I do want parents to know how these kids rally around each other.
I am here to support or represent my:

Encouraged him/her
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
The comradery of these students makes you feel they are safe in what can be an usafe world.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
The Navy has a lot to offer

Type Sea Cadets into google. They have a web page. Basically it is a program available in some areas of the US for 11 - 17 year olds. From what I can see it is a neat program that brings out the best in kids. Best wishes to all of your family's service personnel!

Hi Gale,

Glad to hear you're now a member, now we're groupmates! Yes, I'm learning so much from the NROTC moms and the experiences seem to be very positive. Yes, until 2003 I hadn't heard of NAPS either but my daughter's Blue & Gold Officer (Admissions person) asked if she would consider going to get ready for the Academy and she's never looked back since then. Thank you for the well wishes for my son. And I can relate to your husband missing your daughter, I did at first but at some point my son and I became acustomed to only seeing her 3 or 4 times a year.

Congratulations, on your nieces' commissioning and graduation!! Sounds like your family is very military friendly! LOL

Have a great evening,
Sherry

Hi Gale,

Just click on my icon and on the left side of my page you'll see groups and the NROTC group is the first one. Click on it and join! Well, my son is scheduled to enter the NAPS program this summer. That is the Naval Academy's prep school program where Midshipmen Candidates can study, work out and prepare for entry into the Academy the following summer as a plebe (college freshmen). Your daughter sounds like a smart young lady!! What is her major? Are they your only two? My daughter is older than my son also...only two.

Gale, I'm with you on the main concern being that they get a college education but I also like the idea that they'll have a job after graduation, which sould put them heads above their peers who will graduate and not be able to find suitable employment. My daughter has only been in the fleet less than a year so she's still observing and figuring out if she'll make a career out of it. I think its smart to a least consider but what do I know! She also plans to continue her education though not a MD that I know of! Yes, it is in God's hands.

Take care,
Sherry

Hi Gale,

Oh, your son is preparing early for college, huh. Sounds like a smart teenager too, to know that the military has so much to offer and observe how well his sister is doing at Fordham. I'm sure his sister would love to have her little brother there in NY even if for just a year or so. Of course, you want him closer to home...the tough job of parenting. That's awesome that Chelsey will be close to home this summer, my daughter only had a football game in the area when she was in college so I saw her for a day. She's a graduate of the Naval Academy. My son who was considering ROTC. I don't think my daughter ever applied to ROTC during her senior year, but it would have been a great option.

On her ship her sponsor is an ROTC grad of Ohio State, which is cute because I'm an U of M wolverine! Are you a member of the new NROTC group? It seems pretty informative.

Hi Gale- Great! I set up the ROTC group since that was one thing I felt was lacking here. I know I was looking for something like that when I joined. My daughter is a freshman as well in NROTC. She is at RPI in Troy, NY majoring in Biomedical Engineering. I was reading your above story with interest as we had a similar incident with Kara although probably not quite as serious. Shortly before spring break she called from the health center to tell us they were sending her to the hospital for xrays as they were fairly sure she had pneumonia. Of course she needed to find her own ride. She was deathly ill, a bit shook up so she couldn't find her insurance card. Her squad leader and several other ROTC guys were heaven sent! One of them gave us a fax number and waited right by the fax machine while we sent a copy of her ins. card. They drove her to the hospital, drove her to the pharmacy to get her Rx. And- they were the unit EMT's so I really felt better. We are only 3 1/2 hrs. away but away is away when they are sick :( I agree with your comment about the comradery. Nice they can count on it.

Join the group and I imagine before too long it will become active. Thanks again- Paulette
