Hi Gary.

It was a rush trip and a last minute decesion.  I am grateful that I was able make it.  Andrew's squadron was very helpful and me got to the ceremony from the airport.  It was really neat to meet the CO, LPO, AE chief, and the Command Master Chief.  I got to spend some time with Andrew and some of his friends.  More value in all of that than the money I spent on travel.

I hope that you are able to make the trip.  Try for an off peak time like Feb through May.  Also start searching the travel sites 4 - 6 months ahead of your trip.  We have had better luck with Expedia and Travelocity.  My Fatther -in-Law likes Priceline and has got some good prices from them.

It's been a while since I was on N4M, but I logged on today to see if there is a good group of family with sailors in Hawaii. I noticed you had posted on the Oahu group, so I thought I'd drop you a line. I'm glad to see your son is doing well. I didn't remember where he was sent for his first duty station, but I hope he is enjoying Hawaii.

My daughter Marissa just got there with her sailor about a month ago (his first duty station after 2 long years!) He's an FC3 assigned to a destroyer. They've been doing week-long workups since he got there, so Marissa is feeling a little abandoned. It's a lot for a 19-year-old to move to a new place where she doesn't know anybody, doesn't have a car, and doesn't know her way around. But she's a confident girl and I'm sure she'll adapt. Take care and best wishes to your son. Susan

Gary, glad to hear everything is good with Nick. Devin's ship is set to deploy tomorrow 10-22-10. He will be gone until Jan 2011 sometime. He is scheduled to be back in San Diego for VLS school starting in early Feb. There is "word" that his ship will have a 2nd delpoyment while he is still in and that would be sometime in Dec 2011. His 4 yrs will be up in April 2013 but he isn't planning on reenlisting. He wants to come back to ND and attend college for Criminal Justice. His 1st stop after leaving San Diego will be Hawaii....he is excited to see that state and get started with underway....this is what they have been training for.

I was lucky enough to fly to Las Vegas and meet up with him over the wkend of 10-9-10 thru 10-12-10. He had time off and drove up from San Diego and I flew in. We had a great time in Vegas. He recently turned 21 so we did have to have a couple of beers together but just enjoyed each others company. It will be very hard to say good bye tonight when we talk again. I am so very proud of all our girls and boys in the military!! Have a great week and weekend and we will keep in touch.

Gary, Hi, how is everything with you? We are good....but missing Devin terribly :(
He did come home for his brothers high school graduation in May. It was a busy full week for us but GREAT. Dev's ship was out for about 3 wks and gave a touch of what it will be like when he is underway.....I am not to excited about having such limited communication with him but that is his life for now. It is great that we can email him while he is underway.
He is enjoying San Diego and just this last wkend went to a Padres game and said it was alot of fun. He has been to the beach a few times and even gone camping w/other sailors from base. He is a very outdoorsy and loves the weather there. Much better that North Dakota haha. They deploy in Oct sometime and then he will be back to the states in Jan 2011 for C school.....finally. He hasn't started yet and will have been on the ship for almost 1 yr before starting school.
How is Nick doing?
Have a great day. Nice talking to you again. I haven't been on her much.

Gary T, Dev needs to be there by 2-5-10. We talked to him last night and he will be leaving GL tomorrow 1-19-10 for home for a couple of weeks. He will fly from home to San Diego but not sure what date. His ship will be leaving for training around the 5th and he wants to be there before they leave so he can join his ship. I guess he won't be doing the classroom training for VLS but instead will have hands on training on the ship. He spoke to his sponser yesterday and she said he is still on the VLS team but will do the classroom training at a later date and report directly to his ship.....he is VERY excited about this. His hard orders indicated that the VLS might have been taken away from him but I guess he will just to the class at a later date. His sponser will meet him at the airport and turn him over the VLS commander. I am anxious to see him again but it will be hard letting him go in a couple weeks again ......knowing it might be 1 yr before we see him again. I guess his ship is set for deployment sometime in the fall for a long haul. It would be great if Nick and Devin get a chance to meet. Drive safely and enjoy the precious time with your son.

Just reading your post about getting a pass to drive onto GL base. Will they give you the pass without your sailor? When I pick up my son, he comes out to the visitors center, then we drive onto base an go to barracks to sign him out. It sure would save him a long walk an me a long wait if I could just drive on in. I am always in a rental car.
