Jan - I am very sorry that you son's Navy career is ending on a bad note. I know my son has had days, weeks, even months that he has been unhappy, but I still see it as being a good thing for him. Being in the Navy itself is different from a norma...

Hi Jan, My thanks to your son for his service and congrats to him on a successful tour. I certainly can't blame him for choosing to get out - I made the same decision myself. You and he will both gain perspective over the years. Harsh decisions ar...

My son has been in the Navy for 11 years and while there have been times that the Navy did things that seemed unfair or just down right crazy, they also provide my son and his family with a good life in the overall scheme of things. My mother died...

I took your advice and got a myspace. It seems to be want Daniel likes instead of email, which is what I am used to . I haven't done anything with my page as I need my grandaughter to come over and help me. Daniel should be in Texas by now, he left GL last night. He didn't seem to mind my getting on there.

Hi, Daniel is on my space and my son John and my daughter in law, but I didn't sign up for that as I wasn't sure Daniel wanted me to be able to see what he was writing his friends or what they were saying to him, so I still just have email. Problem is he doesn't check his email much. I know we will have the cell phone once he gets to school. I guess I will have to ask him about myspace. see what he wants me to do. Thank you for writing, I really want to stay in touch and the other Moms like you, who I feel I have things in common with. My husband and I are retired, him from the Post Office and me from medical receptionist. As well as some other jobs. We hope to go see Daniel in Texas in Aug. Should he hot!! I have 4 children, (one lives in heaven) and 8 grandkids

I haven't been well and one Mom wrote and she said " hey, where have you been, do you not need us now after graduation?" or something like that. And I wrote back, "No Way!", just been busy getting ready for company. Tired from being sick. There are a few Moms I want to get to know better and you are one of them, so anytime you want someone to talk too. We should talk about ourselves as well as our kids don't you think? I just don't want to pry. Share with me what you are comfortable with ok?

Hi, Thanks for writing. I am kind of surprised though at one thing you said. They get charged for everything? Food, Toliet paper? I always thought meals were payed for, room, etc. When did that change? I know its been awhile since Bob was in the Navy but it was free then. What happened? I guess I thought their paychecks were theirs to do what they wanted with, I know Daniel is going to buy a computer and a cell phone.

Daniel will do great at Battle Stations. John said it is long but kind of fun. I think he likes working with a team. You will have so much fun at graduation, it is so wonderful seeing our Sailor's. John is doing great right now. He actually started getting serious in classes today. It seems like he is living in one big frat house right now. They have been hanging out at the mall, the beach, staying up until 1:00 in the morning. He is having alot of fun living in the dorm like situation. They are responsible for everything they need now, including toilet paper! I have sent many care packages packed with snacks. He has his cell phone with internet so we talk and e-mail daily, it is great. It is so different after graduation, you will be so happy. Good Luck, I will pray for your safety. Janeine

Yes the first few weeks they are like a bunch of boys at college in a frat house. This will soon pass as soon as classes begin they have study time that they need to do. The navy is accostom to this and they will get this out of their system. So many this is the first time to be away from home and out of the confines of parents but this too shall pass and they will be back to study

Janeine, it wasn't as bad a trip as it could have been. Got a great shuttle guy to the Base and so we requested him to the trip back to O'Hare.... time with Michael was way too short which was the hardest... he is off to Meridian, Mississippi Wednesday...... glad this part is over! Thanks for the email and concern.

Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud, Was relieved, Encouraged him/her
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
My son was actually doing okay without me. My first card from him let me know he felt boot camp was easier than he thought and if you just listen you do not get yelled at. I worried everyday before I found that out thinking he was crying himself to sleep at night because he was miserable.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
Our relationship has grown stronger, This was a maturing experience, The Navy has a lot to offer, This was the best decision he/she could have made

Left as a boy, now a Man

Graduation was so great! Just the anticipation of waiting for his division to walk in was too much. The whole ceremony was very well done. They go out of their way to make family and Sailors feel special. When it was over and we all got to stampeed down to the boys, it was crazy. I am short so trying to find John was funny. I was so happy to see him, so proud. The first thing he wanted was a steak and lobster lunch so off we went. (Lone Star, very good) We had our 1000 questions ready and he was… Continue

My New Sailor

John called yesterday to let me know it was over and he had his Navy ball cap! His over-all view of boot camp was good. He always talked about how he has matured, how much fun he had (he loves any social setting), the great food and it was not as hard as he had expected. On the other hand he is glad to have it over with and looks foward to his next phase. I asked him if would like to do it again and he said "NO!". I sure do love my Sailor.

Division 217 Ship 5

I received my Mother's Day card from my son today. I literally came running/jumping into the house when I got the mail. I have been waiting for the address so I could write back. I was very relieved to hear he is happy and doing well. He said it wasn't as hard as he thought it would be and as long as you listen, you do not get yelled at. Graduation is June 13th and I am already making my plans.
