Hi Jeanny, My son is in San Diego now. Where is yours? He's coming home this weekend. Where are you in Austin.

Hey Jeanny, so glad to find another mom from Austin! The navy came knocking on my door as well. My son scored a 96 on the asfabs so they were all about him until they found out he was only 17! ( The one time we are really glad our sons are not of age!) Is your son on a carrier at present? Mine is at Great Lakes in hospital corp school. He was at Coronado in buds, but decided he enjoyed it too much to do it just once!! He will deploy in several months and I've decided to just not think about that until I have to.

Jenny,
Didn't realize your son was on the Nimitz, too. So is my son. At least they aren't going on deployment for awhile.

Jenny, My son Seth is in SD and he loves it there. He calls it his "home away from home". We have gone and visited him there and it is really a beautiful place. Even the bases there are so friendly. I miss my guy, but he is happy in SD. Hang in there and keep sending him your love all the time. Barb

hey jeanny, you will 'get better' long before year 2 :-) he has alot to learn and experience, i mean just the island that the base is on is cool, if you ever get the chance to go out, i encourage you to do so. it really will give you sense of some of the things he tells you about. have a great day.

Hey there jeanny, i know what you mean. chas sometimes wears his heart on his sleeve and also 'tries to protect me' from bad things. sometimes i can hear it in his voice when he calls, or when like i said, i will 'allow' 3 weeks to pass and then i initiate the phone call. I have found, that during the times when 'he doesn't want to talk about it', all i have to do is wait a few day or even a week, and out of the blue, i get a phone call from him that starts off as 'hey mom, i want to ask you a question.............' usually, two or three hours later, we have talked about what is bothering him or his concerns, and together we come up with a solution. i must say, that 9 out of 10 times, he has the answer, he is just talking it over with me for my opinion. i take that as a sign of his continuing maturity as a young man, and pray daily, sometimes three or four times a day that God continues to bless and keep him and his fellowship mates under his watchful care. So, from one mom to another, our sailors are grown men who know how to shoot M16's, but they will always be our 'babies'. take care and have a great day!

About me:
I am a mother of 3 beautiful children and I love them all dearly. I am learning to deal with my oldest being away from me day by day. I try to stay as involved as I can in what Zach is doing in San Diego and keep up with the two children I still have at home.

When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was concerned or afraid, Was proud, Encouraged him/her
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
Even though your child is miles away from home, he still loves you. He learns life lessons and you can't necessarily get to him to ease the pain, or fix it for him and because of that he is a much stronger person.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
Our relationship has grown stronger, This was a maturing experience, This was the best decision he/she could have made
