I totally understand about the busyness of this time of year. We have been busy traveling to see grandchildren----First Communion, Confirmation, graduation from 8th grade and then just yesterday, the state convention in Richmond. In June we will be driving to see our Sailor graduate from A school. My husband will be having surgery at UVA on the 17th and so I will need to be with him for awhile as he recovers. He has reached the age for prostate troubles but luckily his brother-in-law just had the same thing about 6 months ago and so we know what to expect. So July sounds about right for us too.

There is another mom from Stanley who would like to get together also and I know of a mom who lives in Verona too. She doesn't get on much though.

I don't work outside the home anymore. My husband wants to not retire just yet with things the way they are and it stressed him to have me unavailable for "stuff" so I stopped working. My job was only food service at JMU and to not be standing all day is wonderful. Of course now I am the one with the "honey do" list lol. We will keep in touch and when a good time comes around get to meet then. It will happen sometime, we live too close for it not to that's for sure.

My son was homeschooled through high school because I felt his life was in danger at Harrisonburg High. When he was in 9th grade he was hit and needed stitches over his eye and about a week after that happened he was in the hospital with orbital cellulitis on IV antibiotics for over a week before being released. Our youngest by 11 years, it was just too frightening an experience. He graduated from Bridgewater College in 2006 with a degree in Philosophy and had talked about Law school but didn't do his homework properly and finally decided upon the Navy. He got 100% on the ASVAB and they talked him into Nuke school so that is where he is now, older and hopefully a little wiser.

Thanks for telling me what an AM is. All the acronyms are confusing but it is fun to learn them and then use them on the Sailor because he always seems surprised that I can talk a little "Navy".lol Sounds like your son will have a very marketable skill when he gets out. That is a very good thing to have in these times especially. Tell him thank you for his service when you speak with him.

It would be fun to meet, if you like the idea. Throw out some times and places that would work for you and lets see if we can manage it,OK?

Well we sure are close! I live right in Harrisonburg! Since you are a nurse do you work at the hospital? Maybe, if you do, we could meet for lunch sometime. I am off for the Summer so am pretty much free any day. There is another Mom on here that was trying to have a meet n greet kind of thing earlier this year right at the O'Charlies restaurant and no one showed up. I forgot to go and felt just terrible when I found out that we were the only ones that would have been there. Anyway what is an AM? It sounds like your Sailor is going to be that but I am unfamiliar with all the Navy terms. My son will be a nuke when he finally finishes his schooling. Right now he is in A school down in Goose Creek SC which is near Charleston. He will graduate his A school June 12th and then get to come home for a little. Then he gets to wait to class up for Power school which will be awhile since one will start right before he graduates and I think they start every other month or something like that. All of the schools that he has to go through are 6 months long and then he has something called Prototype which is also 6 months long. The Navy takes a long time to make a nuke so he is in for 6 years minimum active duty. Whew! Guess I am being a little chatty. It is so nice to "meet another Navy Mom that lives so close! So please write back and tell me about your son.

Hi, Jody! I saw your comment on Sailors in P'cola for A School. My daughter's boyfriend has been there since beginning of Feb09. He is AM and should class-up sometime in July if they're still making the progress they'd hoped for in catching them up. The average wait the last few months has been 5 months or so (from reading old posts/comments). There are some posts/comments about "night school". So, some of them will have to adjust to a much later "life". Not the early to rise, early to bed they drilled into them at boot.
Dan has found a lot to do.. he likes to run so the beach has been perfect. He found a few friends from boot camp to pal around with.
With a cell phone and laptop he's kept in touch with his mom (my friend) and, of course, my daughter. They text 4-5 hours a day off and on...and he calls about every other day.. oh, and yahoo messenger with webcams... He also talks with his mom about 2 times a week.
I check-in with the P'cola group alot... they are a chatty bunch. They give a lot of good information, but I don't comment that much.
So, I hope your son enjoys his time there... most of them do when they get over the "free time? what do I do with free time?" feeling.
Which barracks is he in?
More another time.. Cyndie

Hi Jody, I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. As far as I understand, they do not turn people away. I would bring ID. Did you get the parking pass? If not, you can park outside the gates and walk in (it's a pretty long walk but well worth it). You will need to show ID and if you are not on the list, they will possibly make you wait until everybody who is on the list has been seated and then let you in. I don't think it this week is a huge group graduating so there shouldn't be a problem with space. Do you know who is on the list for your recruit? - send me an e-mail and we'll talk more.
