Hey there, We are right outside DC, but 2 of our children went to Governor's School in Richmond, so we have been there numerous times. Our favorite place to eat in Nacj Mama's on Cary Street!

Sounds great! Where in MD do you live? I lived in Arnold, Towson (go TSU!), and Bowie in the 70's & early 80s and my hubby is from Rockville. Our RPI SO is July 22/23 so I will miss you in July, but definitely want to meet in August! Are you stay...

Hi Kay, You sound exactly like us in terms of wondering how the RPI bill will be covered! Haven't heard a word. I think, without forewarning parents, it would be assuming a lot to expect them to bridge the gap - but, who knows, we are new new new ...

Hi Kerri-
It does seem like the summer is flying by. Kara left today to go visit one of her friends from the unit for the weekend. She also got an email about O-Week so I know she is starting to at least mentally looking in that direction. They have a big group coming in it sounds like :) We did end up getting a small travel ironing board and a regular iron for her to take. They will need it to touch up their uniforms (at least the the iron). Early on they had "ironing parties" lol. I think she ended up putting her uniform on the table most of the time to iron it to tell you the truth so I'm not postive how much use the board got. If you know if your son is rooming with another NROTC guy then they could share one. That first year is so crazy knowing what to take and what to expect- the unknown it what makes it so hard. Do you know what dorm he is in?

We had a beautiful warm day today- Hope it doesn't run away by tomorrow !
Enjoy your weekend- Paulette

Hi Kerri-
We were away for the 4th of July weekend so I'm doing some catch up. U of R is right here practically in my "back yard" so to speak. Kara applied there and was accepted but without any financial aid- no way! She had not settled on NROTC at that time :) We did end up doing her fingerprints at the police station. They were extremely picky about exact times and which station (like town or county) that you had to use. Since our particular town uses the county sheriff we had to go to their office between some crazy hours. They were completely familiar with ROTC students coming in for prints so it ended up being no big deal. It's really good that your son is going to one of the early SO groups. Kara ended up in SO 5 last year and had a terrible time with registration. Hope he has a great time :) -- Paulette

Hi & welcome to Navy for Mom's:)) You will find a lot of answers, support and encouragement here. My daughter, Ashley (20), has been in the Navy for 2 years and is an IT3 & my son Tim (19) has been in since Feb 2008 stationed on the USS Nimitz.. What is your son doing with the Navy? If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm glad you joined and look forward to hearing more about you & your Sailor. Pat

Hi Kerri :)

I love answering- really. I would have loved to have found this site before Kara left last year but, of course, I didn't. We have several things in common- 1) We are a non-military family also and 2 ) my daughter was a varsity rower in high school as well. Isn't that something? I think in your area of the country it might be more popular than here. Around here when Kara's school started they were 1 of only about 4 or 5 teams. She loved it but she is really, really short for a rower. So- for college she knew it would probably be coxing or nothing. At RPI the crew schedule completely conflicts with the NROTC schedule after the 1st year so it pretty much doesn't work. Even in spite of that I don't know how any of the kids that are in Science or Engineering majors pull off a Varsity sport with ROTC. It is soooo time consuming. ROTC took pretty much all her spare time, especially during the 1st semester when she was trying to acclimate to everything. They were busy doing something I would say 5 days a week. Most (if not all) of the freshmen ended up on remedial PT at first so that adds 2 days/ week of PT. The gunny sgt. is pretty tough there. He has really high standards :) That's alot of time with their course loads. Is it doable- oh yeah but it does not leave much room for goofing off or laying around or partying. There's some breathing room but they don't have time to really get in trouble which I'm sure is the idea. Then there is the community service projects, joining drill team or color guard and all the practices for those and the competitions (means going away overnight on the weekends). They have a lot of fun for those and they learn lots of time mgmt skills.

Seemed like she changed clothes a zillion times a day too. In the first few months ( I'll clue you in because this was a surprise to us and we found ourselves at Walmart shopping) they must dress in PCA. Stands for Proper Civilian Attire. Early on that means: no jeans, collared shirts, must have a belt on- any time they are going to Navy Class, going to the wardroom, going to the Navy Office for something, etc. Turns out to be pretty much anytime they leave their room- unless it's a "drill" day and then they have to be in the uniform of the day. It became such a big deal that Kara just wore PCA all the time unless she needed to be in uniform- it was just easier :) They relax it up a bit after a while so they can dress "normally" again. I remember freaking out a bit because I don't think she brought but maybe one collared shirt and 1 pair of Khakis and that wasn't going to cut it. And- there is no where to shop very close except Walmart.

Cold- yep. Gets really cold, in the teens during winter and this past winter it snowed a lot. He will need a good winter coat. The Navy will issue him a winter coat but it can only be worn with certain uniforms (I still haven't figured that out yet). And he'll need boots too- there are no tunnels so he will be tromping across campus in a lot of slush and crud. Don't bring it in the fall though- it can wait until after winter break for the most part. Enough of the novel for now- didn't mean to overwhelm you- yikes! Have a great night.
My email is : pvansice@rochester.rr.com if that is easier for you- thanks- Paulette

Welcome to Navy for Moms. My sailor is currently waiting for final orders to go to Hawaii. He is a sonar tech aboard a submarine. He's been in for a year now and I'm excited that he gets to go to Hawaii! You'll find a wealth of information here on this site. Along with Friendship, Support, Determination, Inspiration and good conversation! Have a Wonderful 4th of July and lets not forget why we celebrate it and how we preserve it! GO NAVY

Hi KP- Welcome to the NROTC group and welcome to your son to RPI :)
My daughter will be starting her 2nd year this fall. It's been a great experience for her and we've found it to be overall a great group of kids and officers. There are a few pictures on my page. She will be one of the staff at O-Week this year.
It wont be easy letting him go but I remember it happening so fast that my head was spinning ! And I took a lot of comfort in the fact that I would be back 1 week later to see her again- lol. For some reason it also seemed that we actually got closer in a lot of ways during the year.
Those 100% cotton socks are a bummer to find. We went with the most percentage of cotton which was about 90% I think. Found them at Penneys if I remember right and they worked fine. I did find some online later at Footsmart but they weren't cheap. The biggie is to stay away from all the "new" moisture wicking stuff that feels so soft. Tek Gear makes socks that she really likes and work really well too with thicker bottoms. We get those at Kohls- all black and all white. They end up with so many uniforms and shoes it is crazy and they need the right kind of socks for all of them. By the end of the year the girl had 5 or 6 different pairs of shoes and boots ! The dorm rooms are not very big for goodness sakes- lol. If you have any questions please feel free to ask :)
