Days Inn in Great lakes/Lake Bluff is one of the closest motel from VA hospital and they do have free shuttles. Their rate is around $45/night. It is a walking distance to Flannagans restaurant where many navy moms have meet and greet. I can look for more hotels with a free shuttle in this area if you would like but I believe $45 is one of the lowest price around at a decent hotel.
If you want to rent a car I can give you direction and all.
Let me know if there is anything else you would like to find out.
My prayers are with you.
If you decide to fly out to see your son in the hospital, please let me know so I can give you infos you need. How to get here, where to stay....etc.

My husband hasn't had a situation like this before so he is not sure. But he think, most likely RDC will let him know while he is at the hospital or after he gets out there that he is going to be set back.
So just keep in touch with your son and be prepared to change your plan.
Good luck!
Visits by relatives and close friends of patients are encouraged because of the therapeutic value in maintaining family ties and continued contact with the environment outside the medical center.
Visiting hours for all wards are 11:00AM to 8:00PM daily except for inpatient Domiciliary programs. Each program has established policies concerning visiting hours. Please check with the program staff.
Visiting hours for the intensive care unit are 24 hours a day, not more often than hourly, visits limited to 10 minutes, immediate family members only, two at a time.
Visitors are expected to adhere to the established visiting hours; however, family members of patients on the Seriously Ill list may visit at any time with the approval of the treatment team.
Only two visitors will be permitted to visit a patient's bedside at one time.
Generally, children under 15 years of age may not visit patients on the wards without prior approval by the treatment team and charge nurse.
About his PIR, you might need to change your plan if you already have hotels and stuff booked. I asked my husband (RDC) and most likely he will get set back and won't be graduating on Feb 6th. But wait to do anything till your son tells you for sure. Ask him about it next time you get to talk to him.
Please let me know if there is else I can help you with. I am glad to hear that your son is out of ICU.
