Annie, Why do you think it will effect his career? I can’t help but think it may have been a blessing. When Justin went in, he started the training for Master at Arms. Unfortunately, (he thinks) the stress fracture of his foot or ankle received in...

As I read this, tears rain down my face. I am a Navy Mom, with a son who refuses to even acknowledge I exist. I'm looking for answers and I most certainly understand what all the Moms are going through. I haven't heard from my sailor (he went in i...

Ty Kay,
She is as sweet as she is beautiful too. When I turned 55 and still didn't have any grandchildren, I can remember thinking "wonder if I ever will have any". Now almost 6 years later I have 4, my youngest son has blessed me with 3, two girls and a boy and now my oldest with his first baby a boy also. They are Emily 5, Phoebe 4, Theron 10 months and Ruki 5 months. My youngest son and his wife both work as correction officers at a state prison here in Oklahoma and I live with them and babysit, since my husband passed away a little over a year ago.
I read your post and wondered if you would share why your son doesn't acknowledge you at all? I know that would break my heart.

Hi!
Just got off the phone with Rick, said what I needed to say. He thinks I'm silly, but promises to do what I asked. Also says he knows Justin. He said yeah, he just had a baby not too long ago! Tell Justin if you talk to him soon, to make sure Rick does what I told him! Thanks for listening!

Sorry about that, had to stop and regain myself! I can't believe I'm this emotional! I worry that Rick doesn't understand not just the history of the ship, but the fact that he now has a place in that history. Prior to the Cole he was on the Kennedy when it was decommed. Also another huge piece of american history. O.K. I'm better now. What's a mother to do!

Hi Kay!
I have some news that leaves me with such mixed emotions! I don't know if I mentioned to you that Rick broke his foot while on deployement to Rhode Island. Well, I just got off the phone with him and he is in the process of checking off of the Cole. He will be assigned to shore duty for the rest of his enlistment. When he did his 6 months over seas, I worried constantly. In the back of my mind all I could think about was how the terrorists hit the Trade Center 2 times before they took it down, and the Cole had already been a target once. Would they keep trying? I met the Cole in Mayport, Florida to go on the Tiger Cruise back to Norfolk. I hated it when I had to say good-bye to all the fine men and women I met. Was happy that his deployment to foreign seas and some unfriendly places was over. Now I find myself sad and happy again. Happy that he should be safer now, sad that I will no longer be a DDG mom after this Friday. I just left a voice mail for him to call me. I know that what I have to say may fall on deaf ears ( he has not really enjoyed his Navy experiance), but I will say it none the less. I will tell him to take these next few days and really look around and look back. Look at your rack one more time, look at your friends, look at the mess hall with the folded flags, the one that was flying when the ship was bombed and is covered with soot, the one that covered the remains of those who were lost ( and remain on watch), the one that flew when the Cole returned to the Port of Aiden during the seventeen minutes of silence. Take one more look at the seventeen stars laid in the floor of the mess hall, one more look around the damage control office where he works. Most of all take one more look at those he has served with, and to thank his chief one more time for me, for keeping him safe, for teaching him the skills that he will take with him when he enters civilian life and goes to the fire acadamy. I could almost cry as I write this!

Hi Kay,
Sounds like your children are really on the ball. How proud you must be. When did your son go in? My son will graduate BC 12/19. We are so excited. What Walmart is your daughter at? I have 4 kids total. 2 girls, Angala and Danielle are in Florida and my oldest son, Adam, lives in Elkhart. Let me know how you are, Jeri King

Profile Information

About me:
I am the mother of Justin, a Yeoman on the USS Cole. Before joining, he put himself through Ball State University. He and his wife gave me my first grandchild (a little boy) on June 27, 2008

I also have a daughter, Kat, who graduated from Manchester College May 2007. Currently, she is working as a customer service representative at Wal-Mart. Her career field was English with a minor in journalism, while her brother majored in political science.

Justin is actually following a family tradition on both sides of the family. His Paternal Grandfather and Great Uncle served in the Military during WWII. My father was offered a chance to go to Annapolis, instead he remained in the Naval Reserves and went to Boston College, majoring in English, while he was a trainer and a commanding officer in the Reserves during the Korean Conflict.

My Paternal Grandfather served as a LT in the Army Medical Corps during WWI, my Maternal Uncles served as well, one as an LT in the Army, and the other one in the Navy (I don't know what his rank was.) My daughter wants to serve as well. I think it would be awesome, both my son and daughter are two of the strongest people I know. No matter what, they will succeed.
I am here to support or represent my:

When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
My son is a better person. He has matured, although he still has a ways to go he is on the right path.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
The Navy was not the right path for my loved one/me.
