Hey Kim.. It's me Kim from Ky. My son Troy said he had made some friends but he didn't mention any names. He's a kindhearted person, so I'm sure if he knows your son he will do everything to encourage him along and help him thru this. Keep in touch, if there is anything I can do to help you thru this let me know. We will all pull thru and be fine.

Dear Kim,
How are you holding up? I know, it's still fresh, without your son. It will get easier, I promise. Now remember, when you do recieve his first letter, it could be sad. Don't panic if it is. His letters will become more uplifting.

Once the recruits get into the rountine of Boot Camp and over being homesick, they like it.
I'm cutting everyone short tonight. I just got the computer, it's after 2 AM! .HAHA!
Please stay in touch.
Take care and God bless,
Barbara

Hi Kim,
My daughter's first day was Nov 10 as well. You should receive his civilian box over hte next few days and your form letter will come shortly thereafter. I can tell you that altough I have not received her form letter. I know that gradution is suppose to be 01/06/09 or 01/08/09 depending on which division he is in. he will get a phone call on week three, so the instant you get his information make sure to send him a calling card so he can call you. After that your next contact will be at week six after they get their Navy caps. unless you are exchanging letters. Although this is my first time around the block for my daughter, her boyfriend (Whom she encouraged to join) left before she did and we had to go through all of this once already. There is agroup for November Boot Camp Mom's I would suggest joining it, you would not believe all the information you will get and feel so much more at ease. Also on YouTube, Navy boot camp has a two part segment that walks you though everything your recruit will experience over the next 9 weeks. If you plan on traveling to see your recruit on PIR day there is always a meet and greet the night before at the Ramada anad watch for that group as well it will be popping up soon. If you are still feeling uncomfortable after all the stuff we overload you with today, call his recruiter or send him/her an email, they can go online and get the recruits information and give it to you.

Hi Kim,
My son left Nov 9 from Dallas to BC. I have only gotten the call that he made it fine. I agree that this site has given me so much info and direction on what to expect! I am waiting to get his box still....driving me crazy too! I hope you are doing well today and would like to keep in touch. My son, Kyle, is 18 and is going for RP Spec.(chaplain's assistant). What is your's going for as a job? Have you gotten the box yet?

Dear Kim,
How are you doing today? I hope all is well. I'm so glad it's finally September! HAAH! I am not a summer person at all! UGH!

I hated that box, we all do. Unless this is something new, the box should only have your son's belongings in it. The Form letter, updated though, that comes around the second week. The Form letter now tells the parents about their child's Division's graduation date. This is new, the Form letter added this information now.

From what I was told, there's no more tickets, but you can download a car pass if you want.

Unless the Navy changed their format, they only allowed four people for each graduate. The seating is limited. That's why I tell everyone who closes in on graduation to get there around 7:30(ish) AM. There are 800 graduates every Friday. Seating is very limited.

What you can do, look at the calender, check the date that your son leaves, and go down 8 Fridays, it's usualy always 8. So you can get an idea when he graduates, But before you tell your boss, I do suggest that you wait for that Form letter, just to make sure. Every now and then some mom will write me that their child is graduating in 7 weeks.

The airport is O'Hara. You will need a car, everything is far apart.

We stayed at the Ramanda Inn. My husband did check prices, and he said their's wasn't bad. They have an indoor pool, I even swam twice! HAHA! They have free breakfast. nothing fancy, but nice. Also they have a soveignor shop just for Navy family, and are cheaper. Also, the Ramanda Inn has free shuttle bus, both ways. to the graduation.

There are other hotels around, and some also have the shuttle. The Form letter should have information on the hotels. If not, just go check out on hotels in the Great Lakes section.

As for a gift, this is tricky. Since the Sailors are in uniform, a lot of things are not allowed. I heard, if you buy a necklace, it has to be smaller than the dog tag they wear. I always suggest a nice watch. You're safe with that.

As long as their in uniform, the Navy supplies what they need, so they can't wear anything, else. Also, no cologne, aftershaves, nothing with a fragrance.
No gel or anything for the hair. No oils of any kind, it ruins the unifrom.

This is a common question, there is a very good change, that your son can't spend the night with you. Very, few graduates have that honor.

When he graduates, he'll tell you what his permission is. In many cases, the graduates have Liberty weekend, meaning they can spend time with their families, but must be back on base by 8:30 PM.

Every graduate has different permissions. My daughter Kim, we had her until until 8:30 PM. On Sunday, she had to be back on base by 1 PM, but that was her orders. Some other graduates still have the entire day on Sunday.

Then there is the "Grad and Go". If you son has that, it should be written in this Form letter. There are cases like this, the the family can only be with their child a couple of hours, then the Sailor leaves to wherever their A School will be. A School is the Navy training school.

Kim, take a deep breathe, all this will fall into place my dear friend!! HAHA!! Again that famous Form letter, should have your son's address, with his Division and Ship numbers. the ship is a building he sleeps in.

As for the recruiters, in most cases they don't have as much information as they think they do. Good chance they won't know how to locate your son's Division, Ship and the address. So wait for the Form letter, that comes around the second week after your son leaves.

Oh word of caution, when you do write, no fragrance or musical cards. I have heard stories that the Boot Camp recruits can get into trouble for that.

Now relax girlfriend, it'll all fall into place.! HAHA!! I was the same way last year! HAHaH!

I'll let you get going. You have a blessed day.
Take care and God bless,
Your friend,
Barbara

Dear Kim,
How are you doing today?
Please, don't hesitate to ask any question. It was just last year, when I was a nervous wreck, and so many moms helped me through Boot Camp. It is scary, the unknown of what's happening to our babies.

I was thinking the worst, especialy with a daughter. By the time she graduated, she told me she loved Boot Camp, who'd think, right!! HAHA!

For some reason, I heard this a couple of times, some moms on the chat, are rude. I don't like chat rooms anyway. That gets me so mad. This website should always stay pleasant and supporting to one another. I thought I'd warn you about that on the chat. Stay here with rest of us, and you can also join groups if you like. There's also prayer groups here as well.

Let me get going. Please stay in touch.
Take care and God bless,
Barbara

Dear Kim,
You're so sweet, thank you. How are you doing today? This Navy for moms is such a blessing.

You'll be fine, we all survived this. By the time November comes, you'll be a pro at this! HAHA! You know when it hit me, that this was real, at my daughter's farewell dinner. My older daughter had a poster made, with Kim's picture on it. That's when I broke in tears, realizing this was really going to happen.

It's very hard on us moms. So bring tissue with you when your son gets sworn in.
After your son leaves, within 48 hours, he will call you, let you know he arrived safely. Now you'll need patience.

You will recieve a box with his civilin clothes in it.
Then a form letter will arrive, it's all about graduation, so keep it in a safe spot. On the back, your son will have a few sentences on it. You'll get some relief, seeing his handwritting.

Around the third week, you'll recieve your first long letter. I do warn moms, sometimes that first letter is sad, so don't panic.

In the meantime, your son is fine. It's just a matter of him getting into the rountine of Boot Camp and over being homesick. Once he adjusts to it, he will like Boot Camp. They all do, beleive it or not.

Now, as for you, before you have a nervous breakdown...we all went through this! HAHAH! Please stay in touch with other Navy moms. I'm always around.
Together we will help you through Boot Camp....we haven't lost a mom yet! HAHA!

Please don't hestitate to write.
Take care and God bless,
Barbara
