His leave is the same as this year. He is off at 1600 on Monday and I booked his ticket for Tuesday. Last year he missed the free bus to the airport and had to take the train. I wanted you to know that if he takes the early morning flight the airport does not open until around 6:00 am.

Hi, sorry I have'nt been on in awhile not much new. I did hear from my son about a week ago he called & we had a long talk . I hate to think how much it cost ,but he hadn't called in 2 months. He is still cooking, but he said most of the guys have to scrape & paint the ship along with other jobs ,because of the heat they work 9-5 I think with every weekend off.He said a lot of times the guys go to other places to eat if they have liberty instead of the barge, but they do have food there. He also was suprized I had mailed him a care package he got it in 1 week sometimes in the past it took up to a month.

Hi Kim!! I bet our kids know each other, Rud was cranking in the galley. Ill ask Rudger if he knows a Hans, but what is his last name..I think this is really neat to know other kids on the same boat. Rud might think its kinda odd..But thats what he would expect from his mom!

hi,I'm not sure if he knows Han's or not he said he thinks he has met about everyone on the ship. He is a cs.so doesn't have to wash the pans He showed some pictures they are so big you have to get inside them almost to scrub sometimes. He moved up to the ward room which just cooks for like 40 officers instead of 2000 guys everyday. He has learned how to do fancy garnishing vege prep. bakes pies etc. He only had one day leave, while in Cairnes went snorkling with friend Fox at Great Barrier Reef was a very special once in a life time thing. Was expensive $2.00 for bottle of water,$3.50 small bottle of Coke etc. The shellback ceremony was cool they had to wear clothes inside out , breakfast had green food color, eggs, ham, potatoes. Had to eat fast 2 min. sprayed with fire hoses neon green liquid had to through that uniform out etc. He also has repair locker main fire fighter have to learn more jobs in case of emergency. I don't mean to ramble on I like to find out as much as I can so I pass some of it on. I know my spelling & grammer are not that good. sorry

Katie e-mailed and said she doesn't always get a copy of the newsletter or even see it, but she does know about it. Never thought to mail a copy home. She asked what Hans last name was. I said, well you know how we don't use last names - which always gets her since she knows last names and we go by first. But, if you add me as a friend, you could let me know your sons last name. Once he's done with his cranking, he'll be back in personnel, right?

Katie called this AM to say she is officially done with her cranking! No more officer laundry or their dining hall tablecloths. Back to the real world of Damage Control.

I pack Katie cookies in freezer ziploc bags. I use a cookie scoop so they are more uniform and pack better. If the cookies are firm/crisp, I just pack them in 2 horizontal stacks. If they are soft, I pack them 'bottoms' together in case them stick together. Since she has asked from some of her civilian clothes here and there, they have always been in the box to help with packing. Otherwise, I have used bubble wrap for packing.
I went on=line to the USPS and had them deliver me a pack of APO/FPO boxes and the customs forms so I would have everything set when I went to the post office. They charge military 11.95 instead of $13.95 for the large flat/rate box military boxes. They also have other flat rate boxes, but I always seem to need the larger size.

Hi Kim -

Thanks for letting me know. Katie has never sent me any newsletters off the ship, but I will asky her about them. The other day she said how she was talking to a yoeman in the office about when her relief would be onboard - her 90 days of laundry duty are just about up. I asked if his name was Hans, but it wasn't. We haven't heard from her the last day or 2. Just sent off a package - wondering when it will catch up to them.
