Welcome Kimberly from one of the Rhode Island Mom's! I remember when my son was waiting to leave for boot camp, my emotions were quite mixed. He had a very clear vision of what he wanted to do and my role now was to support him. I would like to share one of my memories from boot camp. One morning when I was driving out for work-I noticed a box on our front porch. It was a medium size box-only a small address label on one side. I opened it in the garage...in it was all my son's belongings. I knew the box would eventually arrive-because my son told us all his "stuff" would be sent Home. It was a very disturbing moment for me...but in those seconds I realized that my son really was on his way to what he wanted.It was just a shock for me to see all his belongings, even his wallet in this cardboard box. We all got through boot camp, he is now stationed in North Carolina with the Marines-he loves it. Good Luck to your son, your family and his friends.

Hello, the DEP program is a great program to be in. My son was also in that prgram. We got to enjoy him home longer as well. Here is what I found for you:
Have a great evening

Quartermasters (QMs) stand watch as assistants to officers of the deck and the navigator; serve as helmsman and perform ship control, navigation and bridge watch duties. QMs procure, correct, use and stow navigational and oceanographic publications and oceanographic charts. They maintain navigational instruments and keep correct navigational time; render "honors and ceremonies" in accordance with national observance and foreign customs; send and receive visual messages; and serve as petty officers in charge of tugs, self-propelled barges and other yard and district craft.

The duties performed by QMs include:

conduct weather observations;
determine compass and gyro error;
compute tide and tidal current data;
keep logs and records; determine their ship's position by visual and electronic means;
compute times of sunrise and sunset;
follow the nautical rules-of-the-road to prevent collisions at sea.
