"Ginnlynn - he's going to take full advantage of the GI Bill - he's only half way to a degree, so he'll finish that up. He does say he wants nothing to do with nuclear . . . too bad after 6 years of so much training and experience but…"
"My son is home now - his 6 years as a Nuke are done and we are so glad to have him home. I haven't weaned myself off this site yet . . . and I see the not-so-new discussion re theft . . . we had that issue throughout our son's time…"
"MMFA - we raise them to go off and live their lives, and then when they do it, it breaks our hearts! Such is being a Mom. But your heart swells with pride too. I say, you let your emotions show - they are honest, true and full of…"
"I think it was at least a year ago someone posted about www.buildasign.com - a company that will make banners at a discounted price for the military. I kept that sticky note all this time and now that my sailor will be home for good in just a…"
"To LoveDolphins and really all Navy Moms - I'm nearing the end to my Navy Mom career - my son's out date is only weeks away and he may actually be off the ship now. I'm hoping he was one of the sailors "liberated" at…"
"We are all so the same when it comes to hearing from our sailors and sailorettes! I remember sitting in an important meeting and a call came through on my cell phone - I didn't recognize the number, but I had learned to take every…"
"Navy Ma - I emailed my son yesterday and did get a short reply late last night, so I don't seem to have the problem you've encountered. Denied Due to Policy is a new one for me. I have a very good friend, a man in his eighties…"
"LoveDolphin - I was privileged to attend a family day on the GW years ago - we went out to sea and demonstrations were given of flights taking off and landing. I learned that day how hard the flight deck crew works! It is amazing,…"
"I like the idea . . . sneaky but in a loving way. OK - I know we have a Nuke Mom or two here . . . if you want to ask your sailor/sailorette to snap some pics for me, please contact me through the private message manner, and I'll reveal…"
"I have sent him a few photo-shopped pics over the years . . . but he is stubborn and still doesn't send me pictures. I joined facebook only so I could friend him and see the pics he posts . . . they are not exactly what I'm wanting…"
"Me too. I am close to simply giving the money we have for shipping to a humanitarian effort, and donating all this stuff locally. It breaks my heart though, that the Japanese would benefit more from it. Thanks for your…"
"I caught the part about "even the Nukes" were part of the steel beach party - ha! My son is a Nuke and I had high hopes of finally catching him in a pic . . . no such luck. I have resorted to photo shopping his face into…"
"Thanks. I hope so too. I've thought of nothing else for the last two weeks. I have a friend in Japan. Her family is fine, but they have moved to West Japan to get away from the disaster. A fellow scouter in…"
"The green water on the GW was happening back in 2009 (the discussion took place back then) - I haven't heard of it happening recently. I hope you do find a way to get your donations to Japan - such a tough situation there!"
Thanks for the information. Unfortunately my daughter only sends me a sentence or two (no exaggeration) every now and then. She informed me she had mono and was put to sick but never bother to let me know when they re-evaluated her this past Monday. I appreciate any info I can get.
Just wanted to stop in and give you an update. We got reseravations at the Navy Lodge. What a relief for cost savings. Took your advice on luggage. We each got a 25 inch suitcase. Each will either have backpack or laptop bag that attaches to the suitcase via handle (so it does not swing from side to side). Thanks for the info on squat toilets! LOL This really should be an interesting trip. Any other last minute advice...greatfully appreicatied :)
Hi Karyn - yes, I found the prices to be higher there than what I'm used to here in AZ. I did stay off base with my son; he has an apartment, so that was a huge help. We ate out about once a day . . . if the Navy Lodge has a kitchen in the unit, you will save a lot of $ that way. We never did eat on base - maybe the prices on base are lower. There is a lot of walking - comfortable shoes a must! We used the buses and trains a lot . . . rarely used a taxi. I used one large ziplock for my down jacket and it worked like a space bag. I can't stress enough, if I had taken two suitcases, I would never have survived the train ride! My son met me when I arrived, but I had to go by myself by train back to the airport, and maneuvering my one suitcase plus carryon was a workout. Carry tissue with you when you are out and about for the public bathrooms - and google "squat toilet" - you'll get a surprise if you haven't heard about them!
Hi Lisa....glad to hear you had a great time. We will be leaving March 2nd for 2 weeks. So it is expensive huh? After new year I am going to contact Navy Lodge and see about visitor's pass for the in and out. I had been searching hotels and it looked like $150 a night was the cheapest. I can't afford that for 2 weeks. If I remember right, you stayed with someone.correct? How did the space bags work for you? Any tips?
Indeed they have done an amazing thing in joining in such turbulent times. Zack is going in as a corpsman. It makes me nervous but I know he is excited nd I want to just support his decision. Still, Inside I am emotional. I hope we will connect soon. Thank you for being there for me.
