I dont know that you completely get over the comings and goings or missing them during certain events in your life. But it is what it is. We cry when we see them and cry when they leave. I see my son every 6 months to a year. It really does put an...

I will tell you that the schooling is extremely intense. They are not only in school for classroom and study time but to do there works also. It is very demanding and a huge amount of stress involved. All you can do is be there for your son and le...

Happy Saturday :) I was anxious everytime my son went out. But I did get more comfortable with the whole idea. But I do check my email still - every morning to see if my two sailors have emailed. Once I realized what a close knit "family" the sub crew was - I felt better. I found they often went out for a "short" run before they took the boat out for the long months. Also they had different training runs they did -that may have been shorter. I can't say I ever stopped thinking about where he was - but I did develop peace of mind - because my son did. The best call is when they call from the deck of the boat when they surface in the home port. They will pass cell phones around to call home. Now that is a great call . Have an awesome weekend, Kathy

I left my]email setting to the one that told me when they had connected and the mail had been delivered. The one out of Norfolk Virginia - did you get an email from them the first time you sent one that would tell you what to expect? I left that on notify me when the email goes out. So you know when they have surfaced and the email has been collected. It doesn't mean he will get one out - but at least you know they are connecting. My son has been out to sea 7 times. Kathy :)

Hi Lydia - I know how you feel. It is hard. I didn't get emails from my son very often. One or two the entire time he was at sea. BUT he got mine all the time. they just have a 3K modem on theirs and so not a lot gets out. The last time he was out to sea - I had 1 email. The most I have ever gotten was 3. So keep emailing as often as you want. That means a lot to them.

not sure if you got the an answer to when do they get email on the sub.
It is hard to say for sure but when my son is out it is about 3 days and you will get a conformation as to that the email has went to the sub. Each of the boats are diffrent and it depends on where they are and what they are doing as the "pipeline" into and out of the boat is limited and offical mail and orders etc get in and out first. Please just write small notes no attachments or forwards

this is a link to one of my post on sub mail
I hope that it helps

Hi Lydia- Both my sons just reenlisted in the Navy. My youngest son, the Nuke, is instructing in Ballston Spa. It is amazing how fast they grow up - seems like yesterday I was hugging them and tucking them into bed. Now they call me from Japan, in port from sea duty. I have learned patience - that is for sure. I am so proud of all 4 of my kids - my Navy kids have done really well.

Yes, I totally understand Thomas has not got to come home very often and with him in Grotten it was a practical trip for me to make. Kings Bay will be a easy trip on a long weekend. I just have to make sure that he in on shore. He called yesterday and said the barge that they were working on was struck by lightening. He said you never so saw so many people get inside a sub so fast. I be, though a scary incident, it had to be comical to watch especially if you didn't know about the lightening strick.

I missed him so much when he was out to sea. Not much communication ability there.

Hi Lydia- My son has been in longer. He was on a "boomer" as well. The USS Nebraska. He was stationed in Washington. He started out in GA but then they sailed it around to the Pacific. He is now in NY as an instructor.

Lydia,
My son Thomas has not been at Kings Bay very long. I am hoping to go visit him before to long - especially with gas prices going down. He told me that there is not a lot to do on or around base but Florida is just a few miles away. He like this better than Groton as it is more like home. He will be on the Georgia.
