Welcome, Martha Lynn!

Latest Activity

Brunswick is a nice little base. My son has been there for about a year and a half. There isn't much to do off base, it's not a big city, but Portland is only about 25 miles away. The weather has been terrible this summer, seems like it rains all ...

My son just got his orders and he will be part of VPU-1 in Brunswick, ME until the base closes then he will be going to Jacksonville, FL. I hope he enjoys Maine better than Meridian, MS.

Does anyone have a son/daughter in Brunswick, Maine? My son has been there since April, with a P3 Squadron. My e-mail is krissie94063@yahoo.com.

About me:
I am a retired art teacher and run a scholarship fund now. I come from a family of Navy men and I'm very proud to be Steven's mom. My husband's job takes us back and forth from Long Island, NY to Dana Point, CA so each month we live in one of two places. My hope is that when Steve has duty we will be somewhere within traveling distance. If not I'm ready to 'let him fly' and be the man I know he is

My father died in April 08 and my son was Poppy's youngest grandchild. My dad had a Navy funeral and when it came time to give the flag to the family my siblings arranged that it go to Steven. Steve and I didn't know about this and as the grave site ceremony commenced and as the very stiffed faced sailor placed the folded flag in my son’s hands the rest of crowd just lost all composure. Steve held that flag for days. The folded flag was right there when the Navy came to get my son last Sunday. I was so proud but I knew “Poppy” was watching over my big guy.

When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
Be supportive.

I have a thought to share with some mothers that are feeling very sad. Be happy. Your children could not be in a safer place. This is a character building experience and whether our kids ever admit it or not they will grow from it and learn many hard lessons in a very short eight week time period. With BC there is a beginning and a predictable end, which is not always so in real life. In BC they are learning coping skills they will use the rest of their life. This is a good thing. BC is a crash course in learning to be responsible, accountable, respectful and unselfish. Isn’t this what we were teaching them?

Remember that many young adults do not always make wise choices. I have never met too many 18-25 year olds (especially males) who can handle total freedom in the outside world without making some very big mistakes. The Navy is watching their every move and handing out heavy duty consequences for bad choices. This is great! If they went to college no one watches. I can understand a certain amount of discomfort that you no longer have total access to their lives but that’s an adjustment that was coming anyway. The Navy will finish a job that parents find difficult to do. It’s hard but take time to rejoice that your kids have a great opportunity to move on to the next step to being an adult.

Rather than cry or mourn scoop up your husband and go on a honeymoon, especially if the house is empty. Take a rest from worrying about your kids and let the Navy do it. When you get back from your vacation and they go through PIR everyone will be in a new place and taking happy steps into the future.

With all that said I will add that I do write to my son daily and miss him but I have to trust his desire to make this work. He’s leading me and I’m letting it happen the way he asked.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

MarthaLynn, Hi I just read your questions and I thought maybe I could help out. I actually wouldnt recommend staying in Chicago, too expensive and too far. It is within the 50mile radius from the base but the traffic is awful and you won't know if your son will have watch duty during the weekend until you see him at the graduation and if he does that would mean you would be doing a lot of traveling getting him back and forth to the base. If you do decide to go to Chicago for the day take the train there, the station is right outside of the base. Make sure he is not late getting in for the night cuz he will get in trouble and may loose his liberty. Good Luck. Oh we stayed at the Residence Inn. It was really nice.

MarthaLynn, here are some answers to your questions based on our experience on the 2/27 PIR weekend:

Chicago is well within the 50-mile radius the sailors have to stay within during the weekend and is definitely worth a visit (even if it's cold!). You'll have plenty of time to get there, do a few things and get back. Just be aware that there is a lot of traffic and allow for problems (we ran into problems, got my daughter back 2 minutes late and she had to stand an earlier watch on Sunday as a result - meaning we had less time with her). I really wouldn't recommend staying in Chicago itself, unless you have money to burn. You'll have to pick up your son at the base and return him to the base in the evening, so you'll just be running back and forth an extra time if you start and end in Chicago rather than starting somewhere near the base. We stayed at the La Quinta Inn & Suites in Gurnee - about 9 or 10 miles from the base, near the Gurnee Mills Mall (a great mall with lots of outlet stores - you see tons of sailors and their families there all weekend).

You will have your son from immediately after graduation until around 8:00 that evening (Friday), from around 8:00 a.m. until around 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and the same on Sunday. Some sailors will have to stand watch over the weekend, but they will know by graduation when their watch is. If it's in the middle of the day, you would be able to see your son before and after (watches are typically 2 hours long).

You see lots of sailors hanging around together - but they're not allowed to drive or drink (regardless of how old they are), so I would say you shouldn't have trouble as long as they're following the rules.

Military members get free admission to the Sears Tower ($12.95 for others), and we found it to be a lot of fun. We went to the Navy Pier, but in winter weather most of the attractions are closed, so it's just another shopping mall (albeit one with a nice greenhouse area upstairs - great for pictures!). Make sure to get an authentic Chicago-style hot dog (Gold Coast Hot Dogs is downstairs in Union Station, near the Sears Tower) and have some real Chicago deep dish pizza (we went to Giodarnos - also near the Sears Tower - but I've heard good things about Pizzario Uno, which is outside the "loop) near the Hard Rock Cafe, the Rain Forest Cafe and the Rock & Roll McDonalds). We also visited Millennium Park (mostly to see the Cloud Gate sculpture - aka the "Bean" by locals - and the Pedestrian Bridge - both great photo opportunities!

Definitely visit Chicago! It would be a shame to go all the way out there and not see anything. It's really a great city! Check this website for lots of ideas: Explore Chicago. I only wish we had had more time - the city is full of great museums (The Museum of Science & Industry, the Field Museum, and the Shedd Aquarium all came very highly recommended). Once Catie is stationed somewhere permanently, we have decided we have to meet there for a family vacation some day!
