Michigan Mom Missing Her First Born Son

Latest Activity

I don't know whether to tell my son this or not. He graduates boot camp next week. He might get fainthearted thinking about A school! :) He told me in his last letter that after the first three weeks the rest was way better. He said the first thre...

There is truth to those words! My sons PIR is on May 15. I had mixed feeling about getting the first letter. Of course I was excited but part of me was so nervous. I was so afraid he would write the he hated it and was miserable, I knew that would...

No but you can call the RDC and ask them or email at rtc.pao@navy.mil. They usually respond in 1 business day, sometimes sooner. Are you sure your Sailor purchased it?

When my son Aaron was in boot camp, he sent me letters when he could, saying how awful boot camp was and how he regretted signing up for such torture. I felt so bad for him that it was almost as unbearable for me to read his letters as it was for ...

Just want to welcome you aboard! You have found the right place to come for comfort and encouragement while your son is in the Navy. My son is my baby and was so PROUD to watch him graduate into such an AWESOME man. You will be too I can guarantee it.

Hi Michelle!
Any word on Aaron yet? I can't stop thinking about him. A friend's son had this happen with the airforce and he had to stop BC and wait about a year and then he went back in. His Dad said it all worked out in the end, but it was a frustrating time for their son and the family. I am keeping your son and your family in my prayers! ~ Vikki

Michelle, the squeaky wheel gets oiled in Great Lakes as anywhere else. Ellen who posted below can give you the best advice on helping him. her son went thru Ship 17 and managed to stay in. It takes fortitude to do it, not getting intimidated if a superior asks why your mom is callin, writing whatever. the improvements in ship 17 came after moms got involved and got Senators and the Inspector General involved. Not that you need to do that now, but talk it out with Ellen. She is your best resource here on how to help your son. They have little access to info there that can help them, so in that sense you need to be your son's advocate.

Hi, Michele,
No, Jim was taken out of training during the 6th week and sent to Ship 17 because the base psychiatrist recommended him for separation due to his medical history of ADHD. He had gone to be examined because he needed a top secret security clearance for his job. He appealed to the base commander to be returned to training, and had to wait on Ship 17 while his appeal was considered. He was returned to training, graduated with another group and then was put back on Ship 17 in the THU (Temporary Holding Unit) while his paperwork went all the way to the Admiral. This took about a month, I think. It's all on my page under my blog section. The admiral approved his medical waiver and Jim has finished his "A" school and "C" schools in Virginia Beach and is now stationed overseas. He is an Intelligence Specialist working at a NATO Intelligence Fusion Center outside of London. It was a long road for him, but you CAN serve in the Navy with ADHD, so if that's what your son really wants, tell him to go for it! Ellen

Michele - I wrote you on the Ship 17 Mom's page, but I also wanted to stop by your page and give you a word of encouragement. My son also has ADHD and he successfully appealed to stay in boot camp after the base psychiatrist recommended him for separation. It takes perseverence and patience, but I'll be happy to share what I learned during my son's ordeal if it will help. Ellen
