I want to tell you about my wonderful daughter, Sarah. She has known since her sophomore year in high school that she wanted to join the navy. She tells it best so I will just quote from an essay she wrote. "With freedom comes responsibility. I didn’t truly understand this concept until I had the honor of being selected to go on a trip to Hawaii with my NJROTC unit. The highlight of our itinerary was a tour of Pearl Harbor, which ended with a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial. It was there, standing in front of the wall with all the names of those who perished aboard the Arizona that I, for the first time in my life, fully comprehended the price of my freedom. The people aboard that ship were willing to give their lives to ensure the freedom of their fellow Americans, myself included. Their sacrifice allows me to be free: free from persecution, free to do what I wish, free to be who I want to be. It was an epiphany that rooted me to the spot; I couldn’t walk away. I realized that I had been selfishly enjoying all these liberties without any thought to those who had paid so high a price for them. It was at that moment that I decided to join the Navy. Not to be a hero, or to have my name on a wall somewhere at some point in the future, but to serve my country and fulfill my responsibility to protect and preserve the freedom that has been bought with the lives of so many. I yearn to repay those, like the men of the Arizona, who have given their lives so that I may live freely. I yearn to emulate their courage and character; to protect the freedom of my generation and generations to come." I am so proud to be Sarah's mom and a Navy mom!

Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
My daughter is not just joining the Navy, she is joining a community--a group of people who love their country, their jobs and each other.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Spooky wavelengths that you should ask that today!!!! She got her acceptance letter in the mail this morning from Tulane but we are still waiting on the Navy. I am getting more and more anxious. Thanks for thinking of her.

Dana (my daughter) has never had her eyes tested, other than the eye chart on the wall. She does however have seasonal allergies, like hayfever that she takes OTC stuff for and we read that allergies are a common disqualifier. But if that is true nobody from TX or the midwest would ever get in! They sell more Claritin in TX that all the East/West coast states combined. If there isn't a read flag at her Navy medical exam, will they ever see her medical records?
Tulane is $53,000 a year--(I gasp, even typing that figure!) even with athletic and academic sholarships-it isn't in the ballpark. And we haven't even heard if she has been accepted yet. Plus, my husband hasn't said anything negative about her being a Naval officer, but he is really nervous about her going to school in New Orleans. It used to be our favorite city in the world but has changed so much that he doesn't think it is safe for a young girl, 5'1"-102 lbs. She has already been accepted at two of her back-up schools, which have Air Force ROTCs. And yes, she is adding to my craziness by saying she wants to apply for an AFROTC scholarship--'just in case'.
The dates you found are so helpful and for some reason reassuring. Thank you for taking the time.
I look forward to getting to know you and hearing more about your wonderful family. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for the info. Even if those are ballpark dates, it made me less anxious feeling to see them. The idea of the selection board almost seems mystical and the NROTC scholarship is going to be the only way for Dana to go to her dream school, Tulane.
and as her mom, it is hard to be so out-of-control of helping her reach her dream. I know you understand and I can't tell you how much I appeciate you taking the time to search for the info. I wasn't able to go to that link but I will keep trying. I grew up in KC and so many of my friends are Mizzou alums. Your beautiful daughter looks so happy in the pictures you have posted. Thanks again, Lefty

Hi ~

Thanks for accepting my friend request. My daughter has been a Naval officer for about a year and a half now. The Navy has many opportunities for talented and bright people who are willing to work hard. I look forward to learning more about your daughter and sharing some of my daughter and my experiences with you.

I really appreciate a response so quickly! Yes, Tulane is a long way from CA! It is tough on both of us right now. She seems to be doing better now that she has been there a few weeks, but it was very tough on her at first - PT was the biggest challenge. This morning is some sort of final orientation, followed by an initiation, so I hope it goes OK.

I read your email that you sent with the essay that Sarah wrote. I can see why you are so proud. What a wonderful daughter you have. My son is also a NROTC Scholarship student at USF in Tampa. He will graduate and be commissioned in December. We are so proud of him we can't stand it.
